Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to work at Croydon University Hospital as a Renal and General Medicine Registrar.

This 12-month fixed-term position at Croydon University Hospital is designed for an ambitious doctor committed to transitioning into ST4 specialty training in Renal Medicine or systematically compiling competencies for a JRCPTB e-portfolio. Working alongside substantive specialty trainees, you will receive full consultant supervision and identical training opportunities across both nephrology and general internal medicine.

Our department is dedicated to delivering outstanding local and specialist care while providing a vibrant environment for junior doctors to innovate, complete audits, and build a competitive portfolio for higher specialty applications.

Main duties of the job

  • Medical Registrar On-Call Rota: Participate actively in the Medical Registrar on-call rota, taking leadership responsibility for the assessment, management, and triage of unselected acute medical admissions.
  • Renal Inpatient & Referrals: Manage and evaluate inpatient and acute renal referrals on a context-dependent basis, providing specialized nephrology advice, triage, and structured management plans under consultant guidance.
  • Patient Management: Deliver comprehensive, high-quality day-to-day care for a blended cohort of general medical inpatients and dedicated renal firm patients, addressing complex multi-system illness, acute kidney injury (AKI), and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • Outpatient Clinics: Attend and actively participate in consultant-supervised outpatient renal clinics, renal hot clinic and hypertension clinic for young people.
  •  Leadership: Lead and coordinate ward-based multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, ensuring safe patient reviews, efficient treatment execution, and seamless discharge or specialty transitions.
  • FY1 Supervision: Provide focused clinical supervision, bedside teaching, and daily support exclusively to Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctors on the unit.
  • E-Portfolio & Governance: Utilize protected educational opportunities to gather workplace-based assessments (WPBAs), reflections, and case-based discussions for your ST4 portfolio, supported by departmental audits and quality improvement projects (QIPs)

Working for our organisation

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust provide hospital and community services from a number of community and specialist clinics throughout Croydon. The Trust was formed on 1st August 2010 through the integration of Croydon Community Health Services and Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust. Around 4,100 staff provide services for a population of over 360,000 people who are relatively young with a high level of ethnic diversity.

Our main hospital site, Croydon University Hospital is one of the busiest in London. We’re also leading the way in providing more healthcare outside hospitals at clinics, specialist centres and in people’s homes. Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after people of all ages across Croydon and our Children’s Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.

Across the NHS everyone is working hard to meet growing demand and we’re no exception. But with the right people on board, we are rising to this challenge, putting our people in the driving seat, encouraging innovation and transforming our services to give local people the quality of care they deserve. Croydon Health Services puts a great deal of importance on education and training throughout the careers of all of our staff. As well as offering access to a range of core skills training and professional development.
