Consultant - Acute Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Croydon is a busy, exciting and diverse place to work. The borough has one of the youngest populations in London and continues to grow.

Croydon Health Services cares for local people at Croydon University Hospital, Purley Memorial Hospital and in clinics and people’s homes all across the borough.

We are a very close-knit and friendly organisation where everyone of our 3600 members of staff is valued. We strongly believe that our employees are our greatest asset and so through Listening into Action – our way of engaging staff - we empower everyone at any level to initiate and bring about real improvements in our care.

Join us and be a part of the team that is making Croydon proud.  #choosecroydon

Job overview

This post holder should be able to fulfil the on-call commitments as part of service delivery, which includes:

  • 12-hour weekday on call duties (5 in 9 weeks).
  • Acute Medical Unit weekend on-call cover (1 in 9)
  • GIM on-call weekend commitments (once a year)

This Consultant in Acute Medicine post is a fantastic opportunity to join a fast-paced, innovative, improvement-driven service within Croydon University Hospital.

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) within Croydon University Hospital has 46 beds where acutely unwell medical patients are admitted either directly from their GP’s care, or most commonly, from the Emergency Department. Once in AMU patients are assessed, stabilised and have rapid initiation of evidence-based treatments before being referred and moved “downstream” to specialist medically “zoned” wards elsewhere in the Trust (eg. a respiratory or gastroenterology ward) for appropriate specialist medical care. This ensures patients receive the right care in the right place by the right clinician whilst still receiving early input and treatment from a senior clinician (Acute Medicine Consultant).
