Colorectal Triage Assessment Specialist Nurse
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Nurse to join our Macmillan Colorectal Nursing team, providing high quality care for our busy Colorectal Cancer service.
You will need to have excellent nursing assessment and communication skills as the post holder is required to undertake telephone assessments with patients. You will need to be confident in following clinical protocols and making autonomous decisions. You will be required to escalate appropriately and in a timely fashion to the Nurse Consultant or Colorectal Consultants. The post holder will also be expected to independently review results and manage the patient’s onward referral as appropriate. Our Macmillan Nursing and Support Team have a strong track record of providing and supporting professional development. The post holder will be encouraged to undertake further specialist training, which can include training as a nurse endoscopist or other specialist role. The post holder will be supported to contribute to the leadership, education, and development of nursing and clinical teams across the Trust.

Main duties of the job
The Colorectal Specialist Nurse will:
- Work closely with the Nurse Consultant, Enhanced Recovery Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Macmillan Patient Support Officers.
- Have clinical input in the management of patients having surgery and other cancer therapies
- Provide leadership in this field, working as part of a multi-professional team, ensuring patients with Colorectal Cancer and their families receive the highest standard of care and support from the time of diagnosis throughout the course of their disease
- Ensure continuity of care and precise communication between the cancer centres and Croydon Health Services NHS trust
- Contribute to develop, implement and evaluate a seamless specialist service, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care
- Demonstrate a high level of expertise within the specialist service, providing specialist advice, education and support to health care professionals and patients
- Actively undertake clinical audits within the specialist area
- Be responsible for contributing to the on-going development of clinical practice and standards of care within the service, including development of policies, protocols and guidelines and contribute peer review and new Royal Marsden Partner guidelines and developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues
- Ensures the safety and well-being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles

Person specification
Education and Qaulification
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse level 1.
- First degree in Nursing or health related subject.
- Two years post registration experience, including one year in Colorectal surgery / cancer / endoscopy
Desirable criteria
- Mentorship qualification or evidence of relevant experience.
- Oncology Nursing or other relevant oncology course
- Working towards or willing to undertake Masters level study
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Essential criteria
- Excellent communication skills with patients, families and colleagues; including complex information and care of the anxious/ distressed patient
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to contribute and experience of multidisciplinary team working.
Desirable criteria
- A willingness to undertake expanded roles as required, adhering to NMC scope of practice.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Sufficient post registration experience in Colorectal speciality, and to be confident and competent in using the required skills to undertake the role.
Desirable criteria
- Involvement in audit and research.
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to use own initiative including good organisational skills and time management.
- Ability to work autonomously, within the multidisciplinary team, and to direct operational issues affecting the wider team.
- Excellent documentation and computer skills
