Job Role:       Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Tenure:          Fixed Term Contract – 6 months

Hours:            1.0 WTE (10PA’s – would consider LTFT)

Location:        Croydon Health Services (Croydon University Hospital)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to develop and expand the current Consultant specialist palliative medicine provision at Croydon Health Services. This post has been designed to support expansion of the current medical specialist palliative care provision so we can build on the development of a ‘front door’ model of palliative care.

Aims of this service are to:

  • Assess and manage palliative care patients at point of entry to the hospital
  • Reduce inappropriate admissions of patients with established palliative care needs,
  • Reduction in length of stay for patients with life limiting conditions
  • Facilitate preferences for place of end of life care and reduce deaths in hospital (as appropriate)

Croydon University Hospital Macmillan Palliative Care Team is a well-established and respected team. It provides an advisory specialist palliative care medical, nursing and social work service for patients in the hospital seven days per week, 9am to 5pm, including bank holidays.  Out of hours’ palliative care advice is currently provided by telephone support from the on call Consultant at the local hospice. Developments and initiatives across the Trust initiated by the palliative care team have rewarded us with a ‘Good’ rating for end of life care by the Care Quality Commission (2019).

The post holder will be based within the palliative care team in CUH. We are an integrated Trust and it may be necessary to liaise with Croydon community colleagues, and undertake joint assessments out of hospital on rare occasions.  You will work with the core and extended members of the specialist palliative care nursing & social work team.

The post would be suitable doctors who have recently completed their higher speciality training or equivalent, or who are within their last 12 months of training and would like to consider an acting up opportunity. The postholder will have recent hospital palliative medicine experience. This is a locum position with a view to developing a substantive post in the future.

Interested applicants can contact Dr Debra Swann on d.swann@nhs.net or Dr Holly Young on holly.young3@nhs.net or on 02084013000 ext 4906.
