Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a  Clinical/Forensic/Counselling Psychologist or Psychological Therapist at the William Morris Centre, a unique community psychological service, working with adults who exhibit complex emotional and relational problems associated with violence or sexual harm to others. The service provides psychological assessment and intervention predominantly via two pathways; Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) and a trauma pathway (e.g. EMDR). There is opportunity for family and couples work.  There is a social inclusion provision. 

This role is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in working with complexity and wishes to further develop their clinical skills in therapeutic approaches.  We will consider part time from 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours) up to full time 1.0 FTE (37.5 hours).  

Oxleas Forensic Psychological Therapies department is a large, long established and nationally well regarded specialty. Psychological therapists are highly valued within the wider trust and occupy a variety of service-wide leadership roles. Main duties of the job

  • Provide psychological assessment, formulation and therapy to people experiencing complex emotional and relational difficulties that is linked with risk of harm to others.
  • Provide advice and consultation to professionals in non-forensic services.
  • Be responsible for supporting partnership colleagues working with the service users in health and probation, for example advising on and providing highly specialist psychological assessment, risk management and interventions.
  • Work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service’s policies and procedures, and the department’s objectives.
  • Directly contribute to workforce development through both staff consultation, supervision and the provision of training to a range of staff including partner agencies and allied professionals.
  • Utilise research skills in audit and other research and development activities.
  • Supervise and direct the work of assistant and trainee psychologists as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.
  2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological therapy, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s problems, with consideration to systemic factors contributing to difficulties.                                             
  3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals and groups, within the team.
  4. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual.
  5. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically-based care plans.
  6. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
  7. To contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically-based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings and agencies.
  8. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  9. To act as case holding clinician, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of care plans including clients, their carers, referring agents and others involved the network of care.
  10. To work in partnership with other disciplines and to maintain links with statutory and non-statutory agencies as appropriate.
  11. To ensure that all services provided are acceptable and accessible to the diverse communities served.
  12. Liaison with other relevant services in health and probation.
  13. Implement outcome measurement as determined by the local service.
  14. Attend and contribute to psychological therapies and directorate meetings and forums.
