Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Band 6 Physiotherapist with experience working with individuals with learning disabilities.  This is a full time community service role to provide Physiotherapy intervention, management and advice for adults with Learning Disabilities in their residence or within other day services .

The successful candidate will join the Integrated Learning Disability Service in London  Borough of Enfield, where we aim to address both the health and social well-being needs of adults with learning disabilities.

This candidate for this role is: 

  • To provide a very high standard of physiotherapy service to adults with Learning Disabilities (LD), their families and carers, taking into consideration and meeting the needs of a multicultural and diverse population.
  • To act as a resource of specialist advice to the staff of the Integrated Learning Disabilities
    Service and other physiotherapists in Enfield promoting best practice for the specific needs
    of this client group.
  • To take an active role working with local community groups on health promotion projects that enhances the physical health of adults with learning disabilities.
  • To be involved in multi-disciplinary health screening initiatives, to aid early detection and treatment of health problems plus care planning to ensure a smooth and safe transfer to adult provision.

Main duties of the job

To assess the physical needs of adults with learning disabilities (LD) and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment programmes.

To manage a caseload of LD clients with specialist needs.

 To participate in multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment provision.

To select and apply Physiotherapy assessments for LD caseload, addressing skill deficits, enabling the client in areas of independence, self-maintenance, inclusion, productivity and leisure.

To work with LD clients to identify Physiotherapy goals as part of their overall care plan.


To plan and implement individual and /or group interventions, in collaboration with the LD client, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.

To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for LD clients with multiple or complex needs in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention.

 To demonstrate and apply a broad level of understanding of the effect of disability; and provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and recommended adaptations to the client’s physical and social environment.

 To identify unmet needs in the service and advise the physiotherapy team leader as necessary.

 To provide support and education to LD clients and carers regarding aspects of Physiotherapy e.g., equipment provision, rehab programmes.


To assess for the requirement of mobility and physical aids / equipment, ensuring that risks are considered and fully reduced by giving effective instructions for use to the clients and carers.

In order to meet the needs of the Trust you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey or Islington. EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Current HCPC Registered
  • Qualifications in Physiotherapy: Diploma/BSc or Equivalent or International qualification
  • Demonstration of commitment to lifelong learning
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate training in relevant clinical areas and related health subjects
  • Accreditation to take Physiotherapy students on Practice placements

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate PT experience relevant to Learning Disabilities.
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Extensive clinical experience including individual & group work
  • HCPC registered
  • Documented evidence of C.P.D.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in neurology and neurological conditions
  • Experience in supervising / teaching staff / students / volunteers
  • Leadership & first line management experience
  • Experience of involvement in audit
  • Member of Special Interest Group
  • Understanding of resource management

  • Awareness of understanding in developing services in conjunction with NHS guidance
