Then this role is for you!

An exciting role has come up at Homerton Healthcare Trust as Maternity Tobacco Dependence Advisor. 

The appointed candidate will work with the Public Health Programmes Midwife and other antenatal clinic, specialist and community midwifery team members in providing individualised smoking cessation support for pregnant clients within the Smoke-free Pregnancy Service at Homerton.

They will provide smoking cessation support throughout pregnancy using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and motivational interviewing techniques.

• Work with minimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work.
• Provide Very Brief Advice to support pregnant clients through the Smoke-free Pregnancy Service at Homerton.
• Liaise closely with local stop smoking services and work closely with the multidisciplinary team.
• Meet regularly with the Tobacco Dependence Specialist Midwife to assess and direct progress.
• Communicate with clients and their families in a compassionate, personal way.
• Plan and deliver evidence-based stop smoking advice and support for women and their families in a range of settings.
• Keep accurate records and enable good data collection. Maintain accurate up to date and comprehensive records at all times.
• Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales – self-referrals from the individuals, and those from colleagues /other workers.

  • A good level of understanding of evidence-based practice in relation to smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and benefits to quitting
  • Experience of providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice to patients or members of the public
  • Work effectively without direct supervision
  • Able to work on own initiative – work to be checked randomly / regularly
  • Supervision accessible if required and registered staff available for reference
  • Responsible for adhering to standard procedures within own area.

  • Experience of providing smoking cessation support
  • Proven track record of working in maternity services with pregnant women/people
  • Smoking cessation NCSCT trained
  • European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Certificate
  • A basic understanding of audit and evaluation
