Job overview

We're looking for a TB Specialist Nurse to join our team which treats and supports individuals with TB in the borough of Hackney and the City. The TB team has won national awards for its outreach work. We're very keen to appoint a candidate who would be strongly interested in working with our case worker to continue the implementation of our outreach screening initiatives with hard to reach populations.

You will, in collaboration with the team:

  • Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs of care.
  • Be involved in developing a specialist interest within the TB service, aiming to provide a high-quality service for residents of Hackney and the City who have TB.
  • Home visiting of patients and hospital visitation.
  • Having a driving licence is essential due to home visiting, community screening and outreach work.
  • Participate in screening programs based at the hospital and in the community.
  • Be involved in audit, research and health education across acute and community settings would be encouraged.
  • Assist the band 8 and 7 nurses in managing their own caseloads of patients initially, however, will be expected to manage their own case load once training period is complete.
  • This band 6 post is considered a training post and aims to develop the knowledge and skills of nurses with some respiratory experience aiming towards a Clinical Nurse Specialist role.

Main duties of the job

  • Demonstrates high levels of competence as a clinical nurse, utilising clinical and social assessment skills.
  • To participate in Nurse Led Clinics.
  • To participate in screening exercises conducted in the community.
  • To effectively assess patients needs and plan care in accordance with clinic protocols and national guidelines (in consultation with G/H grade nurses).
  • To educate and support patients throughout treatment aiming to provide maximal adherence to therapy, providing particular support to those on DOT.
  • To develop a specialist interest in an area of TB control. Examples of this could be Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) both in Community and hospital settings including contact tracing.
  • To select, carry out and interpret the results of specific tests for TB and HIV, e.g, Mantoux test, blood tests/phlebotomy, etc.
  • Provide support to patients through a regular program of home visiting.
  • To learn about TB medication, and learn about side effects in order to assist in managing patient’s TB therapy.
  • To assist the case manager to specific clients by providing care as directed and in collaboration with senior nursing colleagues.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered Nurse
  • Evidence of continuing/ professional development
  • ENB 998 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Mentorship
  • Post registration respiratory course
  • First Level degree in Nursing or equivalent

Skills/ Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Provides appropriate nursing care to individual patients using appropriate frameworks and methods
  • Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people

Experience

  • Significant post registration experience
  • Experience in working in respiratory ward with patients with TB / other respiratory diseases

  • Health education/ health promotion experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues
  • Understanding of local issues / health care needs in an ethnically diverse community
  • Awareness of relevant NMC guidelines
  • Knowledge of relevant local policies (i.e. infection control)
  • Some knowledge of TB and related issues
