We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Neuro-Occupational Therapist (OT) to join our band 6 rotations within the well-established and dynamic Neurosciences department at the Royal Free Hospital, London.

Main duties of the job

The 9-month rotations enable further skill development and expertise in the assessment, rehabilitation, and management of complex neurological conditions across the patient pathway, including critical care, acute stroke rehabilitation and neurology, inpatient, and community neurorehabilitation.

Our 46 bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) includes a cohort of patients with highly complex neurological presentations and an ICU OT competency-based programme has been developed and presented at conference. Our acute stroke unit has consistently excellent SSNAP ratings, and we have several exciting therapy led service development projects focusing on rehabilitation intensity. 

The well-regarded Neurological Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) provides specialist level 2 inpatient neurorehabilitation, with access to a therapy garden, kitchen, and specialist robotic upper limb equipment. The Community Neurological Conditions Management Team provides specialist input to people living with acute, chronic, long-term, and rare neurological conditions, and has close links with our specialist neuro Vocational Rehabilitation Service. 

On both sites you will be well supported by experienced Band 7 and Band 8 OTs. We are truly inter-disciplinary with a strong emphasis on staff wellness, learning and development opportunities, with dedicated Therapies Education and Therapies Research and Development Teams.

Therapy Services at the Royal Free are truly interdisciplinary with a strong emphasis on active learning, development, and staff wellness. You will be well supported by Senior and highly experienced neurosciences therapists across both sites to further develop specialist neuro-occupational therapy skills and provided with opportunity to participate in service development projects. We have regular in-service training programmes, a dedicated therapies Education, and Research and Development Team

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Degree in Occupational Therapy or Diploma or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration – Occupational Therapy
  • Evidence or portfolio of post-graduate continued development in neuro clinical skills
  • Active membership of special interest group e.g. RCOT SSNP

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate work experience as an Occupational Therapist, including working with patients in field of neurosciences
  • Experience of working in an inpatient physical / neuro setting.
  • Experience of working in an acute/hospital based setting including working within an MDT.
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of approaches for the management of patients including at least some of the following: stroke, progressive neurological conditions, neurorehabilitation, spinal cord injury, critical care, and functional neurological disorders
  • Experience of supervision / student education
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist

Skills and aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of a clear understanding of the role of the Occupational Therapist in an acute hospital setting
  • Evidence of sound clinical knowledge and well-established general assessment and treatment skills
  • Knowledge and experience of general and stroke/neuro clinical guidelines and policies
  • Ability to critically evaluate current research & apply to own practice
  • Evidence of ability to manage a full clinical caseload and prioritise effectively
  • Evidence of ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
  • Evidence of an understanding of the skills required to be an effective team member
  • Evidence of an understanding of the skills required to ensure effective communication
  • Evidence of an being able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Competent IT skills including MS Office and electronic notes
  • Ability to carry out manual handling practices.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of sound neuro assessment and treatment skills
  • Good presentation skills
