Main duties of the job
We invite applications for a post in general paediatrics with a neonatal interest, to start 20th July 2026 for a period of 12 months, to cover maternity leave. The post holder will be part of the daytime general paediatric team, covering the Emergency Department and ambulatory service. They will provide general paediatric outpatient clinics and paediatric subspeciality clinics, depending on their interests. In addition to general paediatrics, this post supports our neonatal service. The postholder will undertake attending weeks on the level 1 neonatal unit and will join a 1:8 neonatal consultant on-call-from-home rota at the Royal Free Hospital site. It is necessary for the post holder to have Level 2/3 Neonatal experience and to be confident in managing neonatal emergencies. There is a consultant resident on site 24 hours and the postholders will be on call from home for the neonatal unit. There is an additional general paediatric consultant on call from home to support the paediatric service. There is currently no resident night component to this post.
A 10 PA post will comprise 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA in the first instance, with the possibility to increase for agreed additional SPA activity. The rota is annualised to allow for more flexibility and better work/life balance.

Essential criteria
- On the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC) for Paediatrics
- Registered with the GMC and within 6 months of being accepted for the specialist register for paediatrics
- APLS/NLS provider
Desirable criteria
- APLS/NLS Instructor

Essential criteria
- Member of Medical Defence organisation
- Participate in on call rota
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Wide range of paediatric experience including neonatology in a level 2 or 3 centre at middle grade or above
- Demonstrable knowledge of the environment in which the service needs to be delivered
- Competence in paediatric & Neonatal procedures
- Experience in Children’s safeguarding
- Quality Improvement initiative
Desirable criteria
- Previous consultant level experience
- Experience in Clinical governance activities
- Previous experience in undergraduate/postgraduate education
Skills and aptitudes
