NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Trainee (ST3 +)

Covid-19 full vaccination is a condition of employment for this role, unless you have a medical exemption. You may have contact with vulnerable service users and we will therefore seek proof of you being fully vaccinated during the recruitment process.

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) is one of the largest  NHS Trusts in the country. Our team of more than 8,000 clinical and support staff serve a diverse population of approximately one million people providing  healthcare services to the people of Brent, Harrow and beyond.

As well as delivering  services across four London boroughs from multiple sites we run major acute hospital services at:

  • Northwick Park Hospital: home to one of the busiest emergency departments (A&E) in the country. The hospital provides a full range of services including the country’s top-rated hyper-acute stroke unit and one of only three hyper-acute rehabilitation units in the UK
  • St Mark’s Hospital: an internationally renowned specialist centre for colorectal disease
  • Ealing Hospital: a busy district general hospital providing a range of clinical services, as well as 24/7 emergency department and urgent care centre
  • Central Middlesex Hospital: our planned care site, which also offers a range of outpatient services and urgent care centre.

We also provide specialist care at Meadow House Hospice.  We are a university teaching NHS trust, in recognition of the important role we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of research to the public.

Job overview

This innovative post is designed for doctors who have completed Core Medical Training
(CMT) as a developmental opportunity prior to taking up a higher specialty physician training post.
The fellows will work in a 60:40 split – 60%, working clinically in General Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology to cross-cover gastroenterology trainees across the LNWHT ( Northwick Park /St Mark’s hospital and Ealing Hospital sites ) and 40% on leadership and quality improvement work based at St Mark’s Hospital, the National Bowel Hospital.
This can be planned in consultation with the  post holder to take account of changing organisational need.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be part of the acute gastroenterology service and will join the other five Deanery appointed, and two Trust appointed registrars, working in the service. The registrars are supported by a team of 5 CT junior doctors and 3 FY1 doctors. The post holder will be allocated an educational supervisor and research opportunities are available and actively encouraged. The Trust does have a strong track record of LAS post holders going on to obtain a training number.

Flexibility will be required to meet the needs of the service but, depending on the interests and skills of the successful candidate, appropriate specialist training can be provided in hepatology, nutrition, endoscopy etc. Duties will include responsibility for in-patient ward rounds (with consultant supervision), supporting out-patient clinics.

Candidates must have gastroenterology experience and be able to cover general medicine on-calls at registrar level.  1B Banding.

Depending on rota requirements there will be an opportunity to work part of the rotation entirely covering general medicine on call which would attract 1A banding,

We will consider applicants who completed their CMT and are looking to achieve IMT3 equivalent
