Job overview
This post is for an ST1/2 junior doctor based at Northwick Park Hospital.
The appointee will be required to undertake all aspects of clinical care within this very busy department supporting the consultants in the management of the gynaecological elective and emergency workload. If appointed you will be working in a busy and demanding but supportive department where you will have access to a wide variety of clinical caseloads.
Following the closure of the maternity unit at Ealing the obstetric workload is based at Northwick Park. This consists of mostly high risk patients with diverse medical conditions. Currently there are 6000 bookings with an annual delivery rate of approximately 5000 deliveries at the NP site. There are specialised clinics for diabetes, maternal medicine, haematological conditions and multiple pregnancy. The labour ward has 98 hours consultant presence and further on call cover. This is separate from the gynaecology consultant cover. Ante natal clinics are at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex. There is a high risk delivery suite with dedicated theatres, HDU, triage, observation bay and recovery unit. There is also midwifery led ward for low risk women and those wishing to have a water birth.
Main duties of the job
The emergency gynaecology workload has increased with the reconfiguration of Emergency Departments across North West London. There is an emergency gynae/early pregnancy unit at Northwick Park and an early pregnancy unit at Ealing Hospital. Acute pelvic sepsis is common and emergency theatre cases varied, providing opportunities for experience in managing such cases.
Ealing has facilities for clinics, gynaecology theatres, day case and in patient wards. NPH is a busy acute hospital in Harrow with a purpose built maternity unit including delivery suite, obstetric HDU, in-patient facilities, day assessment and clinic facilities. There is a level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care unit. Gynaecology in patient and theatre facilities are located within the main hospital.
The rota is Band 1a and compliant with EWTD.
In clinics the ST1/2 is additional to the service needs and will be allocated new patients and supervised as part of the learning process.
In theatre the role of the ST1/2 is educational and they may or may not assist. Career grades will be encouraged to learn procedures in greater detail; GP VTS trainees will be encouraged to learn about what may happen to patients they refer in the future.
In Labour Ward the ST1/2s will be part of the multi-disciplinary team providing care for women in labour or on the antenatal and post natal wards and day care.
