The post holder will practice within a team of nursing staff, and act as a ‘named nurse’ for a group of patients: assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating their care needs. Initially requiring direct supervision the post holder will develop and maintain specialist skills in order to provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised patient care enabling them to work without direct supervision. They will be expected to show an intention for developing specialised neonatal nursing care sklls.

  • To deliver a high standard of nursing care. 
  • To communicate with parents/carers, involving them in the planning and delivery of care by working together in partnership with them as part of family centred care.
  • To manage clinical emergencies as required, ensuring that he/she is up to date with CPR training and newborn life support.
  • To use medical equipment safely and competently and to supervise others in its use.
  • To record and interpret vital signs, informing senior nursing staff and taking required action when they demonstrate deterioration.
  • To liaise with parents/carers; to keep them fully informed of their baby’s condition; to deal appropriately with patients/ relatives coping with difficult situations e.g. bereavement, debilitating conditions.
  • To undertake revalidation and be able to identify personal learning needs. Act in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct and the Trust Code of Behaviour / Values.

Experience

  • Experience of working within a hospital neonatal or newborn care setting (this can be gained through student placement).

  • Recent nursing experience as a registered nurse in a level 2 or 1 NICU
