The Neonatal Governance Lead Nurse will lead and coordinate the response to clinical and non-clinical patient safety incidents, complaints and significant events within neonatal services, ensuring they are managed through the appropriate governance pathways and in line with PSIRF principles. Governance will work collaboratively with clinical teams, families and stakeholders to translate learning from incidents into meaningful and sustainable improvements in care. Support and facilitate system-based learning, reflection and improvement opportunities for staff in line with PSIRF principles and a just culture approach. Provide assurance to the relevant stakeholders that change in practice has been embedded to prevent re-occurrence. Governance Nurse will act as a visible patient safety leader within neonatal services, combining contemporary clinical credibility with expertise in governance, learning and improvement to support safer care for babies and families.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the embedding and continuous development of PSIRF within neonatal services, ensuring learning responses are proportionate, person-centred and focused on improving systems of care.
  • Ensure the appropriate level of investigation is undertaken in response to incidents as per PSIRF, reflecting the severity of incidents, facilitate multidisciplinary learning events, debriefs, after-action reviews and thematic reviews to support organisational learning.
  • Provide oversight of governance aspects relating to neonatal electronic systems (BadgerNet, EPMA, incident reporting systems) ensuring data quality and safe implementation of digital change.
  • To support the Neonatal Clinical Lead, Neonatal Senior Nurse and Matrons with contemporary governance issues as they arise; and assist in the production and monitoring of action plans.
  • To support the Neonatal Clinical Governance Lead, Neonatal Senior Nurse, Matrons and Trust’s Governance and Risk Lead in major escalation plans.
  • To chair on a rotational basis the NICU Clinical Governance meetings in collaboration with the neonatal clinical Governance Group.
  • Maintain and monitor the Neonatology Risk Register and ensures risks are updated within the Trust agreed pathways.
  • Ensure Neonatal Business Continuity plans are in place and up to date.
  • Ensure safety plans & procedures are up to date for the service and workforce.

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration • RN / RSCN / RM / RN (Child or Adult) •Diploma/degree in relevant subject • Neonatal Intensive Care Course - QIS trained (Formerly ENB 405/904) or equivalent)
  • Practice Assessor/Mentorship (formerly ENB 998/997/ MSPP) or equivalent;Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Holds current NLS certificate: Undertaken Safeguarding Children training (Level 3)
  • Significant experience in a Level 3 Neonatal Care at Band 6 and above.
  • The ability to act as a clinical leader with expert neonatal skills ,IT Skills and robust communication skills,
  • Leadership or management training .Knowledge of audit and service improvement
  • Knowledge and Understanding of Clinical Governance , Datix Management , HR issues , Confidentiality issues , budget management and robust infection control processes and high impact skills
  • Clear comprehension of perinatal networks and pathways for care
  • Ability to demonstrate Trust Values
  • Knowledge and experience in coordinating and managing the safe transport of infants from the delivery suite and other clinical areas, including transfers outside the unit, while effectively liaising with Network Units and the Emergency Bed Service (EBS) to facilitate timely and appropriate patient placement and transfers.
Desirable criteria
  • Ongoing professional development through completion of the Enhanced Neonatal Nursing Programme (ENNP), with progression towards a degree or master’s qualification, complemented by Management and Leadership training
  • Awareness of current issues in the NHS / Neonatal Care, relevant national programmes and projects
  • Complaints management , risk manmagement /Report writing experience and understanding of research in neonatal care
  • Participation in clinical audits, Competent use of BadgerNet and Health roster.
