Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Therapy Assistant (TA) to work with our inpatient team.

This vacancy is within the Elderly Care Team.

Are you motivated to work with people and maximise their recovery following an illness?  Are you motivated to help older patients to maintain their function whilst in hospital, allowing them to leave hospital sooner?

The post holder will be working with patients when they come into hospital, working with them on the wards and at times in their homes.

Rehabilitation Assistants work closely with occupational therapists, physiotherapists and nursing staff to help patients regain the ability to carry out everyday tasks such as walking, climbing stairs and getting dressed.  Some of the work is done in groups.  You will be involved in helping patients settle back at home after their stay in hospital.

Patients may require support and encouragement to undertake these tasks, especially if they have a disability or have lost their confidence. You will need to work flexibly with a range of adults, many of them older, to enable them to achieve independence. This will require clear communication skills and a proactive problem-solving approach. You will also need to be organised as you will take on a variety of administrative and departmental duties within the team.

Main duties of the job

A Rehabilitation Assistant’s typical working day will include seeing patients on their own on the ward, assisting therapists with treatment sessions, and accompanying patients home from hospital to ensure they are safe.

Treatment sessions may include teaching and progressing exercise programmes, walking re-education, and practising washing and dressing. The assistant will provide and adjust equipment to assist daily activities and will feedback any risks or safety concerns to the therapists.

Assistant staff will also carry out administrative and departmental duties e.g. collating data, monitoring and maintaining equipment stocks, taking telephone messages, sending letters to patients and referrals to other teams.
