The post is currently based at King George Hospital (no oncall requirements) and the successful applicant will support the delivery of breast surgery services.

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Breast Surgeon. This is an opportunity to join a busy, dynamic multidisciplinary team to help us improve the service that we provide to our population.

The aim of the Surgical Care Group is to become a world leader in the field of surgical management through innovation, evidence based safe and effective patient care and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will:

  • Provision of high quality surgical/oncological management to patients with breast cancer and benign breast disease
  • Provision of 2WW Breast Clinics to achieve the constitutional cancer targets
  • Have a continuing responsibility for the clinical care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department
  • Deliver a high quality responsive surgical service to the patients who use it
  • Be responsible for providing appropriate inpatient cover to patients
  • Undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of a clinical department
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current surgical practice
  • Maintain his/her professional development with all available training opportunities and ensure compliance with mandatory training
  • Work with other Consultant colleagues as a team

The appointee must have FRCS. Wide experience is required in elective and emergency general surgery in the NHS.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and, in recognition of our progress, we’ve been shortlisted for Trust of the Year at the Health Service Journal Awards.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
