Post and Specialty:
Adult Consultant Psychiatrist on an adult male acute Mental Health Ward (Turner Ward), based at Goodmayes Hospital, Ilford.
This 10 PA position has been redefined following a review of our inpatient provision and reorganisation of our inpatient unit. It is currently filled by a locum consultant. It offers 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) post with 7.5 Direct Clinical Contact activities (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), however, there are options to add additional PAs as a special clinical interest or further SPAs to the job plan increasing the total to 12 PAs.
The purpose of this job description is to outline the level of responsibility and accountability of this post. This will ensure that all work undertaken by our staff is clearly identified and carried out under clear lines of accountability.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be committed to establishing a culture of relational care and collaborative working across the inpatient unit. You will work as a senior clinical lead in the multidisciplinary team and provide direct clinical care to patients. You are expected to demonstrate clinical and strategic leadership and provide supervision to clinicians where appropriate. You will work clinically with patients and their families and liaise as appropriate with crisis and home treatment teams, community mental health colleagues; and our partners in care such as primary care, social and acute health care colleagues
The post holder will have clinical responsibility for the care of men admitted to Turner Ward primarily from the borough of Havering. There may occasionally be patients from the other boroughs also admitted to Turner ward, and the consultant psychiatrist may be required to manage or contribute to the care of these patients care in addition.

- The post holder is encouraged to develop services, participating in business planning and clinical leadership within the Unit and the wider directorate or pathways of care.
- Demonstrate leadership skills to deliver effective team working and the maintenance of internal and wider relationships throughout the Trust and its partners.

- To be able to effectively communicate with colleagues, peers, senior managers, and clinical leads within the Trust.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Inclusion in, or eligibility for inclusion in the Specialist Register for Psychiatry or within 6 months of obtaining CCT •
- Approved Clinician status, or eligibility for it.
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Mastery in the management of a broad range of mental disorders in older adults
- • Experience in managing patients from different cultural backgrounds.
- • Working with interpreters and translators
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- • Extensive knowledge of the biological, psychological, and social determinants of mental health disorders and evidence-based treatment interventions.
- • An understanding of leadership and evidence of how this has been put into practice.
Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent clinical skills
- Excellent communication skills both verbally and written
