Neonatal Specialist Nurse

Job overview

The post holder will be a clearly identifiable senior clinical staff member, and team leader. They will have significant clinical experience, provide sound clinical expertise to their team, and deliver high quality care. They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific projects / management functions as delegated by the Neonatal Unit Manager. They will role model the identified Trust values at all times.

In general settings, they will be assigned at the bedside, room leading within their designated nursery. Supporting with education requirements of the area, and being a role model for team members, whilst delivering and overseeing high standards of care.

In specialist settings, they will have a significant level of specialist neonatal clinical knowledge and expertise in Neonatal care delivery. They will provide advice and guidance also.

The role may require supporting colleagues on NICU at the Chelsea and Westminster site.

 

Main duties of the job

 Conduct comprehensive assessments of neonates, monitoring vital signs and identifying any changes in their condition to ensure timely interventions.

Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, tailoring interventions to meet the unique needs of each infant.

Provide specialized nursing care for infants with various medical conditions, including premature birth, respiratory distress, and congenital anomalies, utilizing advanced clinical skills and knowledge.

Educate and support families regarding their infant's health, care needs, and feeding practices, fostering a family-centered approach to care.

Administer medications and treatments as prescribed while monitoring for efficacy and potential side effects, ensuring patient safety at all times.

Work closely with healthcare professionals, including neonatologists, pediatricians, and other specialists, to coordinate comprehensive care and ensure optimal outcomes for neonates.

 Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient care, including assessments, interventions, and outcomes, in compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.Respond swiftly and effectively to neonatal emergencies, employing advanced neonatal resuscitation techniques and protocols to stabilize infants in critical condition.Mentor and provide guidance to junior nursing staff and students, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       Ensure staff adhere to Trust protocols of care, eg Infection Control

·       Take continuing responsibility for the Unit in the absence of the coordinator

·       Assist in managing their clinical team within general clinical areas, and of the total team in the absence of the manager, in line with Trust values

·       Develop and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other professional groups, and staff generally within the Division and the Trust

·       Assist in the delivery of induction / orientation of new staff

·        Act as a role model, ensuring staff work to Trust guidelines and values

·       Supervise, under the direction of their manager, the work of qualified and unqualified staff and learners

·       Provide clinical support and guidance to staff

·       Act as a resource for clinical knowledge to staff

·       Initiate action on complaints & incident management and responses, and assist in their investigation and resolution

·       Participate in recruitment and selection, and develop effective selection and interviewing skills

·       Undertake appraisals of staff, following training

·       Chair team meetings as required

·       Lead on specific projects, as indicated and agreed by manager

·       Have a working knowledge of budget arrangements for area, focussing on cost effectiveness and quality, to ensure maximum use of resource

·       Understand and manage local change with team members, including the embedding of new projects

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (child/adult)
  • Post registration qualification relevant to area of speciality or equivalent Neonatal Intensive Care qualification
  • Teaching/mentorship qualification
  • Relevant post registration experience at Band 5 level
  • Wide variety of clinical experience
  • Experience of teaching and supporting learners/new staff etc
  • Experience of excellence in leading all/part of a clinical team in practice
  • Proven clinical knowledge linked to area of speciality and excellence in care delivery
  • Proven leadership and deputising skills in clinical area
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, staff and external contracts including in challenging situations, demonstrating respect and kindness
  • Computer literate skills
  • Enthusiastic and motivated

  • Experience of risk management/assessment
  • Experience of data collection for quality monitoring/audit
  • Proven management experience
  • Experience of clinical supervision
