Job overview

The successful candidate will participate in the attending rota in general paediatrics. There is no overnight resident commitment. Out of hours, the candidate will provide 1:15 on call cover, providing cover for SCBU, paediatric ward and acute pathway. In addition there is a 1:15 on site late cover between 1700 and 2130.
The successful candidate also provide general paediatric clinics or specialty clinics according to interests and departmental needs. The post is based at the West Middlesex Hospital site, but may be required to work at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site, in line with service requirements.
Post-holders will be able to:
 Deliver excellent care throughout the acute pathway
 Develop patient pathways alongside colleagues working in the Trust emergency department, UCC and local GPs
 Support the governance and development of the service
 Promote early and safe discharge
 Participate in consultant delivered care on the wards
 Deliver consultant review of all non-elective admissions review within 12 hours of admission in conjunction with the on call consultant
 Trainee educational supervision
 Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Main duties of the job

· To be responsible for ensuring patients experience an efficient patient pathway in keeping with national Key Performance Indicators except where the patient’s condition prohibits this.

· Supporting the governance programme in the Paediatric Emergency Department

· Trainee supervision, including WBPAs

· The organisation and supervision of minor procedures in the Emergency Department

· To train in and deliver Procedural Sedation

· To effectively communicate decisions on continuing care to the Patient’s GP

· To engage in innovation and service development

· To attend departmental, governance and other inter-specialty meetings

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Result Areas, Main Duties and Responsibilities

· To be responsible for ensuring patients experience an efficient patient pathway in keeping with national Key Performance Indicators except where the patient’s condition prohibits this.

Research, Teaching and Training

· To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director/Service Lead.

· To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead to ensure external accreditation of training posts.

· Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research/audit portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.

· To undertake, and support the undertaking off, research in the paediatric emergency department, in particular those projects supported by PERUKI.

· The post holder will be an integral part of the team and expected to contribute to training and teaching of doctors in training, medical students, post graduates and other staff groups.

· Undergraduate teaching: Throughout the year junior and senior medical students from Imperial College are attached to the firm for teaching. Medical and nursing members of the unit take part in the delivery of lectures, seminars and tutorials to undergraduates at Imperial College. It is expected that the incumbent will participate in the teaching programme.

 

Performance Management

To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:

· ED – performance indicators

· Clinical efficiency e.g. Length of Stay (LOS) reductions, admission on day of surgery and reducing cancelled operations.

· Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.

· Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.

· Operational efficiency e.g. demand management.

 

Medical Staff Management and Accountability

· To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.

· To ensure that Trust systems and procedures are in place and followed to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments.

· To adhere to Trust / department guidelines on leave, including requesting and reporting absence, and professional and study leave, and to ensure that members of staff for whom you are responsible do the same.

· To participate in the recruitment and induction of junior medical staff as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead.

· To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.

· To be responsible for on-going assessment and regular appraisal of all doctors in training, Trust doctors and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead /General Manager.

· To participate fully in regular departmental activities including department meetings and team building activities.

 

Governance

· To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, and to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Director/Service Lead.

· Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.

· To work closely with the Directorate in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead.

· Participate in ensuring NICE, NSF, PICS, CNST and other national guidance requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.

· To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and any other staff to whom the post has responsibility and that these are updated on a regular basis.

· To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director/ Service Lead.

· To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team and adhere to the Trust Infection Control measures (available on the Trust Intranet).

· To report all clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly, and to co-operate accordingly with any investigations undertaken.

 

Strategy and Business Planning

· To work with medical managers and the general manager to take forward the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.

· To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead.

 

Leadership and Team Working

· To demonstrate appropriate leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national initiatives.

· To participate in any necessary management and leadership development courses as required by the Trust.

· To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and our federated partners- GOSH and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital and other hospitals within the network as required.

· To seek to resolve any conflict or differences of opinion through mediation, negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties

· Provide commitment and leadership in relation to equal opportunities and appropriate senior level management of diversity issues, particularly as they apply to training, people management and service delivery.

Essential and Desirable

Essential criteria
  • Trust Values
  • Full GMC Registration
  • CCT in Paediatrics or equivalent or eligible for entry on GMC Specialist Register with in 6 months
  • Enhanced DBS Clearance
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Good understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council
  • Evidence of broad based training experience in General Paediatrics and Neonates equivalent to that requires for a UK CCT
  • Level 3 Safeguarding training
  • APLS and NLS Provider
  • Experience of Audit
  • Solid understanding of the Clinical Governance Agenda
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Managing self effectively
  • Ability to planning ahead whilst being innovative and flexible approach
