Weekend Pharmacy Technician

Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a experienced technician to apply for this post. The post-holder will work in Patient Services  to provide a safe, efficient and responsive dispensary service at the weekend.

This role includes provision of legally required supervision of staff as well as fulfilling professional duties. You will work as part of a team consisting of Pharmacists, Technicians and Assistants. The work primarily consists of dispensing and checking prescriptions for inpatients and discharge medication. Additional responsibilities include managing workflow and working alongside pharmacy staff to ensure that dispensary services are provided according to all relevant up to date procedures and standards.

The post holder will need to be NVQ Level 3 qualified and have relevant ACT qualification.

You will be required to attend the department during weekday hours for induction and training.

Further weekday hours may be available depending on service needs on staff bank.

ACPT qualifications are essential for this role.

To effectively participate in the provision of inpatient pharmacy services at West Middlesex University Hospital at weekends.

To follow relevant procedures in order to deliver the service in a safe and effective manner

To supervise and co-ordinate junior staff and pharmacy assistants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Dispensary Services

·      Accurately identify, select, label using Wellsky dispense and distribute drugs (including controlled drugs) for inpatient and outpatients prescriptions according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).

·      Maintain high quality of data input of patient information into the pharmacy computer system in order to ensure excellent labelling standards for dispensed medications.

·      Take part in counselling and in the provision of information on medicines to patients, doctors and other health care staff, as required.

·      Use the computer systems to track prescriptions. Ensure medication is dispensed to meet agreed delivery times and to minimize waiting times for patients.

·      Deal with queries from patients and other hospital staff, referring complex issues to supervisor or line manager.

·      Ensure that all medicines are stored according to environmental requirements (e.g. temperature) and to required security standards.

·      Ensure stock levels of all products are accurate and support the appropriate ordering of stock through liaison with pharmacy purchasing and procurement office.

·      Ensure medication is dispensed and checked to meet agreed turnaround times and to minimise waiting times for patients

·      Be efficient in using the pharmacy robot and able to troubleshoot problems.

·      Final check prescriptions within the dispensary for accuracy, in line with departmental procedures.

·      Dispense and check clinical trials where required.

Supervisory and training responsibilities 

·      Support Training and supervision of new and rotational staff on weekends as required.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 or BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences or an equivalent pharmacy technician qualification
  • GPHC registration
  • ACPT qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Medicines Management experience
