Job overview

Specialty Doctor (ST equivalent) in inpatient General Adult Psychiatry – Evans ward, Clare ward, Virginia Woolf Ward – three posts available  

The jobs will involve providing input for: a male inpatient ward in (Evans ward, Clare ward) or a female inpatient ward (Virginia Woolf ward)

All the teams will have a full complement of MDT staff including a Consultant Psychiatrist, one middle grade Doctor (ST level) and two CT/Trust grade doctors per ward (including these roles).

Main duties of the job

Management of the day-to-day case load of the ward

        Assessing new patients and management of all patients admitted to the ward. The applicant must be able to conduct in depth informed clinical interviews, to be able to do mental state assessments, risk assessments (with risk management plan – supported by team Consultant and MDT colleagues), general physical examination and request relevant investigations like ECG, Bloods and formulate appropriate treatment plans with the clinical team and support their implementation.

        Attending daily team hand over and other clinical meetings and twice weekly ward rounds

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

        Carrying out risk assessments and formulating appropriate risk management plans

        Formulating care plans and carrying out treatment interventions as appropriate

        Safe prescribing and recording of drug information.

        Physical health monitoring of patients –including carrying out physical examination and investigations as appropriate.

        Post holder will be required to do necessary documentation in the patient’s electronic notes and liaise with the ward multidisciplinary team and the Consultant as well as other services including carers and relatives, to optimise care.

        You may be required to make referrals to other services and complete discharge and other relevant documentation in a timely manner.

        Liaising with GP’s and various other professionals/ teams within and outside SLAM including with social services, DVLA and the Voluntary sector.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines )
  • Experience in other relevant specialties such as community, in patient, liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice S12 approval

Clinical Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training Ability to work in and lead team
