The Patient Capacity Manager facilitates efficient and effective patient flow through the wards on RLH site, ensuring optimal patient safety is achieved, whilst working with the national and local patient access targets balancing the elective and emergency demand. 

As the Patient Capacity Manager you will be able to communicate effectively and in a timely manner with colleagues both internally at Barts Health and externally and liaise on a daily basis with all key personnel within the divisions on patient flow both verbally and through written documentation.

You will be able to contact and discuss solutions to capacity difficulties with service management teams and Consultants, to devise solutions using members of other clinical and non-clinical staff as appropriate. Clinical decision understanding is vital for this position.

Main duties of the job

•    The role of the Patient Capacity Manager is to ensure flow through The Royal London hospital is safe, timely and co-ordinated. This role will work with the Senior Clinical Site Manager to ensure the daily operational strategy to support is aligned to maintaining emergency and elective care performance 24/7. 
•    To facilitate efficient and effective patient flow through the wards on RLH site, ensuring optimal patient safety is achieved, whilst working with the national and local patient access targets balancing the elective and emergency demand. 
•    To ensure that the Trust maintains the safe and timely assessment of ED patients and contributes to the achievement of the 18-week target. 
•    To assume site responsibility duties and co-ordination where required. 
•    To work closely with the Discharge Co-ordination team on a daily basis to expedite discharge and transfers of care. 
•    To act as an excellent role model and leader to all staff. 
•    Expediting the transfer of emergency patients from tertiary referral centres for care at Barts Health in line with agreed timelines. 
•    Expediting the repatriation of patients to tertiary referral centres following care at Barts Health in line with agreed timelines. 
•    Working with clinical staff to improve processes for admission, patient flow within the Trust and patient discharge procedures.

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse (General) with evidence of further professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised teaching/mentorship qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Degree or willingness to work towards.
  • Considerable years post registration experience within an acute or critical care setting.
  • Sufficient years proven ward or critical care management experience.
  • Awareness of professional responsibilities
  • Experience of facilitating clinical decision making and the application of professional judgement in clinical situations.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Site Management / Bed management experience.
  • Previous Audit experience.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to effectively prioritse and organise own workload and worklad of others.
  • Knowledge of NHS policy and strategic changes to healthcare.
