Job overview

Applications are invited for a  substantive Consultant Hepatologist to be based at Royal London Hospital . We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team of 11 Hepatologist and large group of allied health professionals who strive to provide excellent patient care in a cohesive and forward looking department.  The post holder will be expected to be an integral part of the  Hepatology  team at Royal London providing inpatient and outpatient service. This post holder will work closely other stakeholders including the commissioners to improve the care of patients with liver disease and develop pathways to integrate multi-disciplinary teams in the care of these patients. The post holder will be expected to attend the various  MDT at Royal London Hospital and provide support and guidance to the allied health professional teams attached to the department. There will be opportunities to participate in clinical research within this post.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required as a minimum to fulfil the following criteria within this role:

 It is expected that the appointee will cover the following main areas of work:

 - Consultant Hepatologist based at The Royal London Hospital within Barts Health NHS Trust.

-  Develop and lead the Alcohol  service for Barts Health patients and the wider NEL network.

- Assist in the delivery of shared care protocols for Alcohol services across NE London and develop broader patients.

- Liaise with Commissioners to carry out national priorities and fulfil our CQUIN requirements

- Develop an area of interest within Chronic Liver disease portfolio which will be helpful for the department to look after its varied cohort of patients

- Contribute to outpatient general hepatology clinics at Barts Health and to the inpatient acute hepatology rota at the Royal London Hospital. This involves daily consultant led ward rounds including on weekends on a rota. It includes seeing all new patients triaged to Hepatology from the general medical take and existing Hepatology inpatients and referrals.

- There will also be a commitment to the routine endoscopy service and an out of hours endoscopy on-call rota.

- Participate in  clinical trials in conjunction of the Hepatology Trials Unit.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • CCT in Gastroenterology and G(IM) or within 6m of obtaining same
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Research Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in hepatology clinics and ward work
  • Excellent clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of development and improvement of patient pathways between primary and secondary care

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Detailed knowledge of hepatology and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning
Desirable criteria
  • Familiarity of best practice in alcoholic liver disease

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team – clinical and management
  • Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively with GPs and other professionals in hospital and community
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy with evidence of KPIs
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to manage staff and resources effectively
