Consultant in Dermatology
(Part‑Time, 6 PAs)
Whipps Cross Hospital
Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Consultant Dermatologist to join our dynamic and expanding Dermatology Department at Whipps Cross Hospital. This is a part‑time post (6 PAs) working alongside a highly experienced team of 11 consultants, specialist nurses, trainees and wider multidisciplinary colleagues.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will participate in the dermatology ward referrals, reviewing on average 2 per week. There is an average of 12 patients booked per clinic, unless supervising and an average of 5 biopsies patients per list. The new and follow up clinic ratio is 6 news and 6 follow ups per clinic for routine patients. There are teledermatology clinics run in the form of A&G (BAD guidance of 25 patients per 4 hour session will be expected). The clinics are based at the Whipps Cross Hospital.
We receive approximately 450 2ww adult patient cancer referrals per month week, and approximately 400 more referrals for A&G and appointments across adult and paediatric dermatology.
Whipps Cross provides a comprehensive general dermatology service, as well as a range of multi-disciplinary specialist services including skin cancer, advanced skin surgery, genital dermatoses and psychodermatology as well as providing support to the local GPSI dermatology service. On the academic side we run several commercial and non-commercial clinical trials on site and have close links with the Centre for Cutaneous Research, Queen Mary University of London.
The dermatology department is well-staffed with trainees including 1 specialist registrar, 1 research fellow and 2 clinical fellows. In addition, there is a Dermatology Matron, x 2 band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialists, x 1 band 6 nurse and x 1 band 5 nurse in post.

We also have a 2WW Medical photography service seeing 40+ patients a week.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other professional groups. They will also contribute to audit and clinical governance meetings.

Professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP UK (or equivalent)
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- Eligible for full GMC Registration
- On GMC Specialist Register in Dermatology or within 6 months of attainment of CCT or equivalent
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Comprehensive clinical training in General Medical conditions
- General Dermatology diagnostic and treatment procedures
- Specialist areas including Dermato-pathology, Phototherapy, skin cancers/Pigmented lesions/melanoma, contact dermatitis, Vulval dermatoses, Paediatric Dermatology etc
- Inpatient care for those who require hospitalisation treatment
Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
- Dermatological procedures and surgery
Clinical Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Comprehensive knowledge of general and some specialist Dermatology areas
Audit and Management & IT
Essential criteria
- Evidence of conducting and presenting clinical audit projects, attendance of dept meetings and post-graduate activities and management meetings.
Research. Teaching skill & experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching medical undergraduates Understanding / knowledge of Research ethics
Desirable criteria
- Attainment of MD or equivalent higher degrees

- Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate and problem solve.
- Accountability: ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority
