Diabetes & Metabolism Locum Consultant Post

We are looking for a Locum Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Metabolism
The post will be appointed to the Department of Diabetes & Metabolism, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Diabetes Division, Barts Health NHS Trust and will be based at the Royal London Hospital (RLH), Mile End diabetes centre (MEH) and St Bartholomew’s Hospital (SBH). The post will have clinical sessions and commitment to General Internal Medicine (GIM) at RLH and Diabetes clinics at all three sites. The aim of this post is to deliver clinical sessions specifically within Type 1 diabetes and aim for excellence in clinical standards as required by national audit and the Clinical Quality and Care measures.
The post holder will join the Diabetes & Metabolism team at RLH and join the current consultant of the week rota (contributing 1 week in 7 of general medicine) and provide weekend on call cover for Diabetes & Metabolism (1 in 8) as part of the commitment.
Main duties of the job
• Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
• Leadership, development and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts’ business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director, General Manager and the Clinical lead for Diabetes & Metabolism.
• With the agreement of the Clinical Director and the lead for Diabetes & Metabolism, development of his/her own interests and sub-specialties within the specialty, in line with business planning principles and commissioners’ approval, including active participation in research programmes.
• Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.
• To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Clinical Director, Service Manager, General Manager and the lead for Diabetes & Metabolism.
• The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
• The duties outlined are not definite and may be changed in accordance with needs of the service requiring the post holder to be cooperative and flexible.

Professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MB BS, or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via 1 of the following : * - CCT (or within 6 months of date of interview), CESR , or European Community Rights
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree, e.g. MD/PhD
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Competent and trained In Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus/ General Internal Medicine
Clinical Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Widespread broad-based knowledge of all aspects of Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus/ General Internal Medicine
Audit Management & IT
Essential criteria
- Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current and future NHS challenges and strategy.
- Ability to support team members in business planning via collaboration and discussion.
- Knowledge and basic proficiency of IT systems used in NHS
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare
- Experience of audit/ management
Research. Teaching skill & experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to demonstrate personal experience of clinical research and describe and discuss findings and impact.
- Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to cardiology
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrate number of first/senior author publications in indexed journals, over a variety of subjects relevant to this post.
Personal Qualities
Essential criteria
- Excellent presentational and verbal skills.
- Ability to manage time well to deliver objectives of the Medicine Clinical Board
- Ability to work under pressure Caring attitude to patients.
- Self motivated with an enquiring, critical approach to work.
- Awareness of best practice through evidence based medicine, and personal drive to enact the change with the team
Desirable criteria
- IT skills and computer literacy
