As Head of Finance for Whipps Cross, you will report to the Hospital’s Chief Executive with professional accountability to the Trust Deputy Chief Financial Officer – Operational Finance.

Leading a high profile, professional team, your key responsibilities will include delivering of all aspects of financial management, and leadership of a team of accountants to provide day to day support in all aspects of the Hospital’s financial performance whilst maintaining a positive team culture within the finance function.   Operating effectively as the Finance Director of the Hospital Site, you will be working closely with the Executive team and with clinical, academic and operational colleagues to provide advice, implementing and adhering to financial controls, ensuring operational teams are making informed financial decisions and that the hospital strategy is aligned with the overall group financial and operational strategy and plan.

Main duties of the job

This will include responsibility for delivery of financial plans and accurate and timely monthly performance reports to the Trust Board, ensuring that procedures and controls are up to date and implemented. You will also provide support to the Deputy CFO with strategic direction and business planning for the Hospital.

The role of the Hospital within the region/system is becoming ever more important particularly with devolution of NHS England Specialised Commissioning. This landscape means the Head of Finance role will be required to think broadly across systems and networks to support the Hospital in its role.  

To succeed, you’ll be a qualified accountant with strong financial management and leadership experience, ideally gained within an NHS environment. You’ll have excellent engagement and influencing skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders – including clinicians, Board members and our regulators. You’ll champion best practice, look for ways we can continuously improve and relish the challenge of working as part of a close team to drive financial performance across this large and complex Trust. We are looking for an ambitious, intelligent, credible and articulate leader with exceptionally high standards and the ability to support and challenge high profile specialist colleagues, who can demonstrate commercial strategic thinking within a healthcare setting.

Essential criteria
  • CCAB Fully qualified
  • Education to degree level
  • Masters level or equivalent experience and training
  • IT literate – Spreadsheets, databases, pivot tables ECDL or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Two years financial management experience in a senior role
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines
  • Managing staff and effective team working
  • Experience of leading a finance service in a period of change

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of NHS Finance and policies, specifically related to financial planning
  • Specialist knowledge of the management accounting function
