Job overview

The service at GWC and SLG provides high quality, comprehensive services for people living with HIV with the aim of empowerment, allowing people to live well. The service has a strong focus on interdisciplinary teamwork, where many patients are co-managed via a wider multidisciplinary team. 

We are looking for a dedicated and highly motivated individual to join our friendly and hardworking nursing team who would like a challenge within the field of HIV. This opportunity will provide the selected individual with the opportunity to develop their competencies as a band 5 and gain a strong set of skills within the field of HIV, which will allow for further development.

The HIV network service offers a variety of opportunities and development including;

  • A strong, well-led and organized team who work hard to ensure that patients receive safe, competent and compassionate care that we ourselves as individuals would like to receive.
  • An opportunity to gain a wide variety of specialist knowledge and skills in a supportive environment with a specialist multidisciplinary team.
  • Relevant professional development courses, including in house learning opportunities and competencies. This will also include protected time.
  • The ability to work with other groups, organizations and charities to expand your own network of professionals and services available.
  • A structured competency sign off pathway for band 5 nurses to meet the demands of the service.

Main duties of the job

To work supported within the multidisciplinary team to provide continuing care to patients attending for outpatient care.

 

To supervise and teach junior members of staff and learners as required, and maintain own personal development with support.

 

To be a safe, knowledgeable and effective practitioner at all times

 

To provide high quality nursing care to patients and their families, in accordance with agreed policies.

Essential criteria
  • Intravenous accreditation
  • Phlebotomy/Cannulation skills
  • Ability to prioritize clinical work effectively
  • Can show a non-judgmental approach to patient care
  • Ability to identify deteriorating patients. Experienced nurses will show skills in ward/dept management (nurse in charge skills)
  • Ability to carry out essential and appropriate nursing care and procedures
  • Demonstrate awareness of the nursing care needed by HIV patients
  • Experienced nurses will have clinical competence in providing HIV, sexual health care and specialist HIV drug administration and teaching junior staff
  • Ability to work within set timeframes working to priorities and deadlines
  • Able to recognize own limits and work within those limits of competence
  • Ability to store data/ information safely and correctly
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet service requirements
  • Sufficient to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations
  • Acts in a way that is consistent with legislation, policies and procedures and abide by the Trust Health and Safety policies
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to monitor the quality of own work
  • Ability to use and maintain resources efficiently and effectively and encourage others to do so

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN/ RN
  • NMC registration (in date)
  • Specialist course (or experience) in HIV care for experienced nurses
Desirable criteria
  • Preparation for primary assessor course or equivalent
