We are committed to delivering outstanding patient care through cutting-edge diagnostics and treatment. Our Sleep Medicine Department plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing sleep disorders, supporting patients to improve their quality of life.
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Band 6a Sleep Physiologist to join our multidisciplinary team. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career within a supportive and innovative NHS Trust.
About the Role
As the Band 6 Sleep Physiologist, you will play a pivotal role in leading and facilitating our comprehensive sleep service within the respiratory department. You will work closely with our Lead Physiologist, Dr. John Barry, and the Clinical Lead for Sleep Medicine, Dr. Nadia Gildeh. You will also manage a team of three junior physiologists, overseeing clinical operations while maintaining your own caseload of sleep clinics, CPAP management, sleep reporting, and triage sessions.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and develop the sleep service, ensuring high standards of patient care and service delivery within the respiratory service framework
• Manage CPAP setup, troubleshooting, and patient support
• Oversee and mentor junior physiologists
• Conduct sleep clinics, reporting, and triage sessions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the respiratory service to enhance patient outcomes
Person Specification
• Registered with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) or equivalent
• Experience working within a sleep service, specifically managing CPAP therapy
• Strong communication and teamworking skills, with a passion for service development

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc in Healthcare Science (Respiratory Physiology) or equivalent, e.g. PTP or STP Registered with HCPC as a Clinical Scientist or AHCS as a physiologist, or able to progress to registration
Desirable criteria
- CPD confirming knowledge across a range of specialist respiratory and sleep procedures, from in-house and external training or courses
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Previous experience in lung function testing in an NHS setting with experience working at Band 5.
- Knowledge of respiratory anatomy, physiology and pathology
- Competency in all routine lung function and sleep tests (oximetry, polygraphy). To accurately assess results for reproducibility data quality and write technical reports
- Knowledge of current national and professional guidelines, and experience of reporting according to these guidelines. Experience of using an NHS digital medical record system .
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching small groups using various presentation media
- An understanding of, and experience in running CPAP clinics including like for like consumable replacements and telephone support of this activity
Skills
Essential criteria
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel and Access.
- To be organised and able to prioritise own workload and that of others.
- Able to work unsupervised on own initiative
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of Hospital software.
Other
Essential criteria
- Able to work effectively as an individual and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Have good written and verbal communication skills
- Have sufficient ability to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations
- Willing to be flexible and adapt to new responsibilities and working practice.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching colleagues and patients in physiological monitoring techniques
