Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Occupational Therapist or physiotherapist to work within our growing Multi-disciplinary Hand Therapy department at Bart's Health NHS Trust. You will be based at the Newham University Hospital, providing clinical expertise for a caseload of hand therapy patients from multiple referral routes. There will be close working with our plastic surgery and orthopaedic colleagues on service development projects within the team. On completing competencies there will be an opportunity to continue with hand therapy provision to patients to support the Day Zero Hand Therapy Pathway.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality and specialist occupational therapy interventions to a wide variety of outpatients including the advanced assessment and treatment of hand trauma (Orthopaedics and Plastics), Rheumatology and  Newham  GP referred patients, provision of individual and group education and treatment, provision of assistive devices (splints) and equipment.

To utilise specialist skills to work without direct supervision with patients who vary greatly in age, communication ability, language, functional ability, cultural and social background.

To work in a highly diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and socio-economically varied environment and gain further skills in outpatient hand therapy. Ensure treatment is of the highest standards regardless of cultural or language differences and support the staff you supervise in doing likewise.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational therapy or Physiotherapy
  • HPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at post graduate course/training relevant to clinical specialty
Desirable criteria
  • CSP (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy) or COT (College of Occupational Therapy) Membership
  • BAHT membership
  • Post-graduate study

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 years post registration experience, at least 2 years of which must be in hand therapy (plastics and orthopaedic trauma, MSK and rheumatology)
  • Experience in supervision of junior staff, students and assistants
Desirable criteria
  • Supervision Training
  • Fieldwork educators training
  • Post graduate formal qualification relevant to clinical specialty
  • Leadership training
  • Involvement in relevant COT, CSP or Hand Therapy special interest group
  • Working towards BAHT accreditation

  • Knowledge of a range of clinical conditions, particularly in relating to Hand Therapy assessment and treatment in an acute hospital
