Locum Consultant in Gynaecology ( Reproductive Medicine )
(9m Maternity Leave Cover)
Barts Health NHS Trust are currently welcoming applications for a full time 10PA locum consultant to join the Centre for Reproductive Medicine, based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, in September 2026 for a 9-month contract (Maternity Leave Cover).
The Fertility service at Barts Health is one of the largest NHS services and has excellent clinical results. The Centre receives referrals for secondary and tertiary diagnosis and treatment, and offers a wide range of services, including all forms of male and female outpatient diagnostic assessment, assisted reproduction technologies including IUI, IVF, ICSI, sperm and ovum donation, a full range of sperm retrieval techniques, and male and female fertility preservation for acute and chronic conditions including oncological. The Centre also offers specialised menopausal, gynae-endocrinology and andrology clinics, and general benign gynaecological and reproductive surgery.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will join the senior team of three Subsepciality trained consultants and two Specialist grade doctors in providing a complete range of services, as well as managing and training junior medical and nursing staff. The post holder will be expected to participate in all activities of the consultant-led general fertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART) service, including outpatient clinics, theatre lists and IVF procedures (egg retrievals, embryo transfers, fertility scanning etc.). The successful candidate will also support the senior team in providing on-call cover for the Reproductive Medicine service during nights and weekends on a 1:6 basis

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a member of the senior team within the Fertility service, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake the responsibilities listed below.
To be an active member of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine and help deliver the departmental mission of excellence in clinical care and teaching.
To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and high-quality evidence-based Reproductive Medicine service, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Be responsible for a clinical caseload, ensuring highest quality of clinical care.
To provide clinical leadership within the Reproductive Medicine service.
To participate and lead in Clinical Audit activities, which is an essential and regular part of clinical practice and CPD.
To participate in the Trust’s clinical governance activities, as well as the specific HFEA requirements for a tertiary centre, and to encourage and foster improvements in the quality and standards of clinical services.
To play an active role in facilitating clinical research, including the supervision of junior staff in the development of their research training and programmes.
To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, Community Services and all health care agencies, as well as clinical colleagues across the Trust.
To continually improve on clinical performance, developing protocols and clinical guidelines.
Participate in the weekly process of vetting of referrals from GPs, secondary referrers and internal referrals.
To have responsibility for ensuring that serious untoward incidents, incidents and near misses are appropriately reported into the Trust’s risk management systems.
To work with departmental and directorate managers to achieve relevant performance targets, e.g., waiting times, booked admissions and other national initiatives.
To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients in their charge and the running of their clinics.
To attend weekly team multidisciplinary team meetings.
To initiate and promote research and development activities with a clear focus on relevant clinical and scientific priorities.
To undertake professional supervision and management of junior staff.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCOG or equivalent
- Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- The equivalent of 12 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, of which a minimum of seven years should have been in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Specialist Registrar level
- Completion or within 6 months of completion of RCOG Subspecialist Training in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Higher research degree (MD, PhD, MD (Res))
- Other qualifications which might enhance the provision of the service e.g. Teaching qualification, management qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of broad experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Minimum 2 years experience in Assisted Reproductive Techniques
- Experience of independent Reproductive Medicine Surgery, MAS
- Experience in gynaecological ultrasound
- Able to take responsibility of service without direct supervision
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Specialist experience and training in Reproductive Medicine
- Excellent knowledge and experience in Assisted Reproductive Techniques
- Knowledge of providing fertility preservation relevant to Assisted Reproductive Techniques
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of the clinical governance agenda
