One Post – Fulltime

Whipps Cross Hospital

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Respiratory Consultant post at Whipps Cross University Hospital, Bart’s Health NHS Trust.  The appointee will work alongside 8 established respiratory consultants at Whipps Cross University Hospital, based in the Chest Clinic and respiratory wards.

Full time or less than full time (LTFT) working will be considered. If working LTFT then the consultant of the week and general medical rota will remain the same, as detailed below.

Specifically, the post holders will support provision of inpatient and outpatient care for patients with general respiratory problems. There will be a subspecialty focus on lung cancer. The appointee will also be expected to participate in the acute general medical rota on approximately 1 in every 28 weekdays, and 2-3 weekends per year.

The post holder will participate in the respiratory consultant of the week rota providing daily inpatient review for a total of 29 patients Monday to Friday 9-5pm on a 1 in 8 rota, as well as respiratory advice for other teams. Outpatient and subspecialty work is undertaken in the other 7 out of 8 weeks. There is an average of 12 patients per clinic list. Outpatient referrals are triaged via an electronic referral system by the consultant of the week, and we also operate an advice and guidance service for general practitioners.

The department is well-staffed with trainees including 3 specialist registrars, 2 core medical trainees, 2 FY2’s and 4 FY1’s. In addition, there are 7 nurse specialists across TB, lung cancer and airways disease, and four physiologists who undertake lung function and sleep diagnostic work as well as CPAP set-up clinics. Our outpatient service benefits from having a dedicated Chest Clinic with excellent lung function facilities. All consultants, specialist registrars, specialist nurses, clinic nurses and secretarial staff are housed within the same building.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and other professional groups. They will also contribute to audit, the monthly clinical governance meetings, and twice-yearly Trust-wide respiratory governance meetings.

The postholder will participate in the bronchoscopy rota, shared with 2 other consultants, and there is opportunity to do EBUS at Barts. We have our own ultrasound machine and run pleural lists twice a week which the postholder could contribute to depending on skills and needs of the department.

There is a weekly respiratory radiology and clinical meeting. The respiratory consultants meet weekly with management and there are regular Medical Division meetings. Our department has close working ties with the rest of Barts Health NHS Trust, and we are part of a Respiratory Network across all sites.

There is good secretarial support and dedicated office space within our Chest Clinic. We are largely paperless and IT training will be provided on Cerner and other systems as required.

A mentor will be provided, to be assigned within the first four weeks of taking up the appointment.
