JOB PURPOSE


Barnet Integrated Learning Disabilities Team aims to provide a specialist Health and Social Service for Adults with Learning Disability who live in/or originate from the borough.

 To provide a Speech and Language Therapy Service to adults with learning disabilities residing in Barnet. 

The post holder provides highly specialist assessment, treatment and diagnosis to Adults with a Learning Disability referred to the multi-agency Adult Learning Disability Team in Barnet acting as a specialist resource to other medical, nursing, education and therapy staff and providing second opinions in this specialist clinical area. 

The post holder will be required to use highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment diagnosis and treatment of adults with a learning disability with complex communication difficulties who may also have challenging needs and/or eating and swallowing difficulties.

The post holder will lead the speech and language therapy team, being responsible for ensuring governance of the service, staff management/development and achieving service delivery in line with the service specification. 

Main duties of the job

 To develop and provide a Speech and Language Therapy Service consisting of assessment, diagnosis and treatment to adults with a learning disability with complex communication difficulties, challenging needs and/or eating and swallowing difficulties

 To reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness

To analyse and transcribe all aspects of client speech and language at the level of phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, prosody and pragmatics as necessary

To employ manual dexterity in the manipulation and stimulation of the orofacial process

To carry out highly specialised physical examination of the orofacial process, including deglutition (swallowing)

To simultaneously monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of dyadic interactions, encouraging adaptive strategies to maximise effective communication

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate Speech & Language Therapy qualification and License to Practice from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Evidence of registration with the Health & Care Professionals Council
  • Completed RCSLT accredited post graduate dysphagia qualification/ RCSLT dysphagia competencies framework
  • Evidence of competence in managing complex dysphagic patients with a learning disability, including those requiring enteral feeding
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration qualification in leadership/management
  • Post registration training and qualifications in relevant areas to the post
  • Positive Behaviour Support trained
  • Makaton Regional Tutor

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post registration clinical experience in learning disabilities and additional needs
  • Evidence of high level clinical skill and knowledge of learning disability with communication and / or swallowing difficulties
  • Experience of supporting AAC-users who are communicating with high-tech communication devices e.g. Ipad eye gaze
  • Experience of supporting AAC users, who use light-tech communication devices, such as symbols, photos, objects etc
  • Experience of working in a community setting
  • Experience of working with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Evidence of ability to utilise evidence based practice
  • Experience in providing training to a variety of different audiences with high level presentation skills
  • Appropriate postgraduate experience of working with a wide range of adults with a learning disability with communication and / or swallowing difficulties
  • Experience of staff and student management and supervision

  • Experience of service development work
  • Experience of developing clinical care pathways
  • Experience of undertaking research and/or clinical audit
  • Evidence of developing innovative practice and of being proactive in management change

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities in adults and associated physical, cognitive and social and behavioural conditions and their management.
  • Good working knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for adults with a learning disability with speech, language communication and / or eating / swallowing difficulties
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of AAC e.g. Talking Mats, Makaton (keyword signing), symbol and photo-based resources
  • Holistic view of communication difficulties in context of adult Learning disability
  • Able to work well in a team setting and utilise a client centred, Goal setting approach to rehabilitation, in partnership with clients and carers
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload and work on own initiative.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to assess and train clients and carers in the use of high tech and light tech communication aids
  • Display an understanding of the current NHS and learning disabilities agenda
  • Knowledge of the Pan-London guidelines for safeguarding
  • Knowledge of public/service user involvement and its role in relation to the promotion of quality and the development of user-led services.
  • Postgraduate research in a relevant area.
