We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our Speech and Language Therapy Special Schools & ARPs team to work across 3 provisions with both primary and secondary aged CYP, in the boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Westminster. The post includes the opportunity to work with a neurodiverse caseload and with CYP with a variety of profiles including supporting young people with severe learning difficulties including profound and multiple learning difficulties.

The post provides the opportunity to implement a wide range of therapeutic approaches and interventions in collaboration with education partners. Through joint planning and delivery of interventions in the classroom and through support to families you will ensure that SLT input has a functional impact for the pupils you support.

We welcome applications from from band 5s looking to progress into a band 6 role or existing band 6s wishing to develop their skill sets.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Have access to 1:1 and peer group supervision opportunities
  • Be part of our supportive, friendly, and well-established special schools team
  • Have access to a regular in-house training programme
  • Help the school to embed good universal and targeted level practise within their setting
  • Deliver specialist interventions to children and young people with Education, Health, and Care Plans
  • Work jointly with the class teams and other professionals
  • Help parents understand and support their child’s speech, language and communication needs

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To assess the need for, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment to children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • To analyse auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of children’s communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness in the home, school and other relevant settings.
  • To make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment, using evidence-based practice and outcome measurement to provide the most effective treatment to children and their families within clearly defined care plan.
  • To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment.
  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures relevant to the field, in particular in the field(s) of specialisation.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Degree and Licence to Practise from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of supporting CYP, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Collaborative work with parents and other professionals
  • Experience Training others
Desirable criteria
  • Interest to develop clinical specialism in education
  • Training/experience of supporting students and more junior qualified therapists including provision of supervision and line management

Skills and Knowledge

  • Understanding of Religious, Cultural and Linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management
  • Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to the Education)
  • Knowledge of the principles of audit
  • Good understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)
  • Up to date knowledge of professional standards of record keeping
  • Holistic view of communication problems and philosophy to back this
  • Ability to organise and manage own caseload independently and support other more junior staff manage their caseload.
