Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our Special Schools & ARPs team. This role spans two school sites, located in Hammersmith & Fulham and Westminster, where you will provide speech and language therapy services to children and young people (CYP) with a range of severe learning difficulties, including profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

You will be part of well-established, supportive teams across both sites and will have the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT). The role offers scope to further develop your clinical skills across a wide range of approaches.

Supporting implementation of the whole system’s approach to deliver on speech language and communication plans as identified in Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Working closely with education staff and families, you will help ensure that communication support is embedded consistently throughout the school day ensure that SLT input has a functional impact for the pupils you support.

Main duties of the job

  • Working with increasing independence to provide assessment, diagnosis, appropriate intervention and discharge for children within the role.
  • Working closely with children, families and other professionals, providing advice to others regarding the clinical management to support children and young people as relevant to the post.
  • Supporting the delivery of a wide range of school aged intervention packages in relation to the whole system approach to supporting speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) within designated locality community & school settings.
  • Understanding and meeting professional and legal SEND responsibilities outlined in the Children and Families Act 2014 including contributing to statutory assessments of special educational needs and delivery of Speech and Language Therapy provision as specified in children’s Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). 
  • Maintaining accountability for own professional actions and recognise own professional boundaries, seeking advice from senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous clinical notes in appropriate format and write reports as requested in line with service, RCSLT and HCPC guidelines.
  • Working closely with children & young people, parents, carers and other agencies agreeing decision making relative to clinical management
  • Working flexibly across bases, with a requirement for cross-team working.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice – Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working with children in clinics and/or school based settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience Training others
  • Working with multi-cultural client groups

Skills & Knowledge

  • Working in collaboration with children and young people, parents/carers and families
  • Ability to adapt communication skills to meet the needs of others
  • To be able to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity and awareness of the needs of others
  • Flexibility and good problem solving skills
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment diagnosis and treatment of children with a broad range of speech, language and communication difficulties
  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to carry out use of high and low technical assessment equipment
  • Valuing and advocating for all communication styles and preferences
  • Understanding of child development including Speech and Language, Play and other milestones
  • Knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for children with Speech, Language and Communication needs and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual children
  • Knowledge of religious, cultural and linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management
  • Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to school aged children) including education practice and policy
  • Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group) and awareness of role boundaries
