Chief Cardiac Physiologist - Echocardiography

Job overview

We have a position for a Cardiac Physiologist to work in a exciting and dynamic environment, to support and help define our growing Echocardiography service. The successful candidate will perform Echocardiography in children with a large spectrum of congenital, inherited and acquired heart conditions.

This position is for 12-months and would be an excellent opportunity for a person who is interested in developing their echocardiography skills in paediatrics and congenital heart disease. Great Ormond Street has one of the leading paediatric echo departments in Europe, tackling complex cardiac abnormalities, and working with leading authorities on congenital heart disease, inherited cardiac conditions, and cardiac imaging.   

Main duties of the job

  • To have good understanding of congenital and inherited conditions seen in paediatric cardiology specifically
  • To carry out complex transthoracic paediatric echocardiograms guided by departmental protocols
  • To produce and authorise an accurate, factual and clinical report for each study, recognising when a patient needs to be seen urgently by a Cardiologist
  • To prepare and present interesting cases at departmental meetings
  • To assist with the training of Paediatric Echocardiography protocols to new Clinical Physiologists, visiting Consultants, registrars, and junior doctors as required, ensuring a good learning environment is maintained for all levels of knowledge
  • To demonstrate a positive attitude to the team and contribute to change and developments within the department
  • To be responsible for the accurate inputting, archiving and updating of all clinical data from the Clinical Physiology Department into the Information Database (EPIC)

  • BSc Clinical Physiology – Cardiology OR relevant science subject OR equivalent experience
  • Postgraduate (MSc) certificate in a relevant cardiac speciality (working towards) OR Postgraduate qualification in specialist area within Echocardiography e.g. EACVI CHD Accreditation

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of Adult and Paediatric cardiology
  • Previous experience working at a highly specialist level of independent practice
  • Knowledge of Congenital Heart Disease in echocardiography, cardiac morphology and the corrective procedures performed in the paediatric population

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to use initiative and to prioritise own workload and work flexibly as part of a team
  • Excellent manner with children and their families.
  • Prepared to learn and teach
