Job overview
This is a full-time contract for a well-motivated and enthusiastic person to support the diagnostic Immunology Service at GOSH. The role is to perform support duties to the laboratory, mainly in specimen reception interacting with clinical users and the public. We are looking for someone that has laboratory experience and is keen to learn and willing to contribute to our department. Full training will be provided. The successful candidate should meet the essential requirements listed on the job description.
The Immunology Laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital provides diagnostic services to the Trust, including allergy, autoimmunity, immunophenotyping, cell culture, as well as a national specialist molecular diagnostic service for immune deficiency.

Main duties of the job
- To provide laboratory support to Scientific staff including specimen reception, laboratory tasks, equipment maintenance
- undertake general laboratory filing and administration
- Undertake ordering of stationery and other items
- Provide support to scientific staff in updating documents on the document control system
- Specimen reception: checking patient information and sample type, sorting and numbering of specimens
- To follow procedures for the receipt of correctly labelled specimens and inform lab staff of any errors
- To assist with clinical work in the laboratory as required
- To inform senior laboratory staff of urgent work, any incidents and abnormal or clinically significant results as soon as possible
- To carry out scheduled equipment maintenance in conjunction with the laboratory scientific staff
- Comply with quality standards required in service provision and participate in internal and external quality control
- Comply with health and safety requirements at all times

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
Essential criteria
- GCSE or higher qualification in Maths, English and a science subject (Grade 5 or above)
- NVQ3 or equivalent experience in Clinical Laboratory support
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience in working in an Accredited Clinical Laboratory
- Some scientific knowledge and practical experience of basic laboratory procedures and use of equipment such as pipettes and automated equipment.
- Understand and awareness of procedures to ensure patient confidentiality
- Use of computers including word, excel and laboratory programmes
- Understand Health and safety procedures and practises
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working in the NHS
- Set up, running and maintenance of analytical machines
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Excellent telephone manner
- Good inter-personal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Accuracy in working and close attention to detail
- Organisational skills including the ability to prioritise work

Applicant requirements
The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
