Job overview

GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

SIGHT AND SOUND

12-MONTH LOCUM CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY 8 PAs

Applications are invited for an 8 PA 12-month Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry based within the Dental & Maxillofacial department at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The Maxillofacial and Dental team provide maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic services, paediatric dentistry and restorative dentistry for children and teenagers. The department sees over 5000 outpatient and around 300 inpatients per annum, many of whom are under multiple clinical teams because of their complex medical needs. The unit benefits from a recently refurbished, purpose built suite with 6 clinical rooms.  The department has three all day and a half day operating lists per month within the paediatric dental service.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, the largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK.

Main duties of the job

This is a locum 8 PA role and the post holder will be part of the Dental and Maxillofacial Department, in the Sight & Sound Division.  Flexible working and job share will be considered with a minimum commitment of one day per week.

The department provides maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic services and paediatric and restorative dentistry within the trust. Paediatric dental services are provided for children cared for by The North Thames Cleft Lip and Palate Service and the nationally commissioned Craniofacial and Epidermolysis Bullosa Services. In addition, care is provided for children and young people, usually already known to the Trust, who have complex medical needs that cannot be met outside a tertiary/quaternary children’s hospital. Over 5000 patients are seen annually as outpatients within the dental department. The inpatient workload is just under 300 episodes.

The department has approximately 5-6 half day operating lists per week shared between the specialities. Children having dental treatment under general anaesthesia are admitted under a relevant medical team that is responsible for the inpatient medical care. In addition, the department tries to accommodate requests for ad hoc treatments or piggyback procedures during general anaesthesia for other procedures.

Working for our organisation

We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as the communities we serve, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including people with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic heritage, people with a disability, and people from LGBTQ+ communities. Our hospital is committed to creating an environment that is open and inclusive. Our staff are encouraged to engage with colleagues through the following networks: REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage) ENABLED (Enhancing Abilities & Leveraging Disabilities Network), PRIDE and Women’s networks; all of which are sponsored by a member of our Executive Management Team.

We want to ensure that all of our people, regardless of their background, are seen and heard. We want to attract applicants that share our commitment to inclusion and that understand diversity is a strength that is embraced and valued.
