As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. 

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Student Health Visitor

(Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in Training)

Every day is different working as a Health Visitor (Specialist Community Public health Nurse) with various responsibilities which include: home visits/virtual consultations for health need assessments,  promoting uptake of immunization , conducting child developmental and health reviews, running support groups for parents and working in collaboration with a range of local children agencies such as  Early Years, Children Centres and  Third Sector Organisations .

A fully funded and salaried training places are available now, (Agenda for Change band 5-maximum will be mid-point) . The Health Visitor career path offers lots of opportunities to progress, with salaries ranging from Agenda for Change bands 6 to 8.

Applications will be accepted until 5th  April 2026 for training programme beginning in September 2026 with Kings College London and London South Bank University.

Main duties of the job

This is a training post , you can apply for a 12 month full-time course. The course comprises of 50% academic and 50% clinical placement in accordance with the University, NMC and Trust regulations.

As a GSTT SCPHN student, you will be allocated a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor plus additional support from the Practice Development Lead. 

You will play a fundamental role in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme, promoting child development through parental support, safeguarding children, preventing social exclusion, and tackling important public health issues.

With established Agile Working System, Health Visitors have the opportunity to work flexibly in the community and are a crucial part of the healthcare team. It is a diverse role which involves being part of a wider team that provides you with support as you work to improve the health of local families.

For admission, there will be two stages to the recruitment process:

Stage 1- Submission of a written application by  5th April 2026 at  Midnight.

Stage 2 – Interview will take place on 21st , 25th  and 28th May 2026.

Interview will include a 10 minutes  presentation and  questions from the panel. 

Only successful shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview.

Job Summary

The post of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Sponsorship is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies as a qualified nurse/midwife to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The programme will enable SCPHN students to learn and work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry into the NMC register as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). In collaboration with the Universities, we have the responsibility to provide adequate learning environment and create opportunities which will enable the student to develop knowledge, skills and competencies to take on the role of a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse at the end of the programme. Gaining the required knowledge, skills and competence will enable the registered SCPHN to exercise higher levels of judgment, discretion and decision making in clinical care focusing on four broad areas:

  • Clinical practice
  • Community Engagement
  • Clinical practice development
  • Leadership in clinical practice

Main duties and responsibilities:

The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as a NMC registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse on a defined pathway. These are summarised below:

  • To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations and successful completion of the course
  • To work with the Specialist Community Practice Teacher to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice
  • With the support of the Specialist Community Practice Teacher to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation
  • To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they pertain to chosen pathway
  • To develop/build on skills of caseload and team leadership and management
  • To work within University Regulations pertaining to academic work and student conduct
