Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer an exciting post-CCT Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery. This role is ideal for surgeons who have completed or are nearing completion of their higher surgical training and wish to gain additional specialist experience in bariatric surgery at a high-volume, nationally recognised centre.
The post provides excellent exposure to multiple bariatric operating lists per week, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and one-anastomosis gastric bypass. Fellows will also actively participate in bariatric outpatient clinics and will be responsible for preparing and presenting cases at the weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, gaining valuable leadership and teamworking experience.
The post is offered on a full-time basis, and does not include any on-call duties.
Main duties of the job
Clinical responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in and independently perform bariatric surgical procedures (depending on experience and supervision requirements).
- Conduct pre- and post-operative bariatric outpatient clinics.
- Prepare and present the weekly Bariatric Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, coordinating with the wider MDT members to ensure smooth case discussions.
- Participate actively in the MDT meetings and contribute to patient management planning.
- Support the clinical team with ward rounds and inpatient care.
- Undertake quality improvement projects, clinical audits, and/or research activities.
- Engage in teaching and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and MDT colleagues.
- Take part in service development and innovation projects within the bariatric surgery service.
- Maintain a high standard of professional development, with encouragement to utilise study leave for relevant training opportunities.

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated care trust which provides hospital and community health services for Hackney, the City and surrounding communities. The Trust provides a full range of adult, older people’s and children’s services across medical and surgical specialties.
The trust operates acute services from a single site: Homerton University Hospital, which opened in 1986. Based on an aggregation of ratings across all of the core services provided from the hospital, the hospital has been rated by Care Quality Commission as ‘Outstanding’.
The Bariatric department at Homerton sits within the larger department of General Surgery within the Surgical, Women's and Neonates Division. The department includes 5 substantive Bariatric and Upper GI consultant surgeons, 3 substantive EGS consultants with an interest in Bariatric Surgery, and one Locum Bariatric and Upper GI consultant surgeon. The consultant team is supported by 3 trust grade SHOs, 2 trust grade registrars, 2 specialty trainee registrars, and the senior clinical fellow.
The Bariatric MDT team is comprised of the surgical team, a consultant obesity physician, a consultant chemical pathologist, 2 consultant specialist psychologists, 4 specialist dietitians, 2 specialist physiotherapists, 2 specialist nurses, and trainee and student psychologists, physiotherapists and dietitians.

Qualifications

- MBBS or other undergraduate Medical Degree
- MRCS or equivalent post graduate qualification
Desirable criteria
- FRCS (General Surgery)

- Ability to communicate with clarity in written and spoken English
- Able to lead, make decisions, and respond to service needs
- Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching
- Evidence of contribution to effective audit and clinical risk management
