We are looking to recruit for a permantent role covering a job share working 18.75hrs/wk 

An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, highly motivated and enthusiastic midwife to join our Homerton family as a Birth Centre Team Leader.

The appointed candidate will work in partnership with the Job share who covers the other half of this role, as well as the maternity Ward managers, DS band 7 coordinators and matrons delivering a high standard of care that is evidence based and meets local and national guidelines.

They will work closely with obstetric colleagues and members of the maternity team delivering a high-quality service to meet the needs of all service users. 

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge base, expertise and a passion for promoting an optimal birth experience within the complex care setting.

We are looking for someone who understands the role of managing a shift and can delegate and lead the demands of the wider maternity service.

Main duties of the job

To provide effective midwifery leadership and management to a team of midwives working within the birth centre

To ensure the provision of a 24hour midwifery led service which provides high quality, effective midwifery care that is evidence based and woman centred, and promotes a positive working environment.

To ensure safe and effective clinical practice ensuring knowledge, skills and competencies are current and act as a clinical expert to disseminate specialist skills and knowledge to others.

To enhance the woman’s experience of care and ensure that the needs of the woman are placed at the centre of care delivery.

To manage and develop the performance of the team by ensuring staff are prepared and supported and are competent to practise safely and effectively.

To contribute to the delivery of the Trust’s objectives by working to improve clinical outcomes, increase productivity, efficiency and quality in care delivery.

Education + Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered midwife
  • Minimum 2 years working as a band 6 midwife
  • SSSA / Mentorship qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of post registration education and development
  • NIPE trained
  • NLS course
  • Leadership course
  • QI study day

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Extensive knowledge and experience supporting physiological birth
  • Experience leading a team
  • Evidence of applying research to practice
  • Experience supporting water births
  • Experience supporting complex birth plans and ability to support a team managing complex birth plans in the birth centre
  • IT skills including Office, Excel and powerpoint
  • Confident with Badgernet and Cerner Milleneum
  • Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Organisational skills, ability to self motivate and use own initiative
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience managing and leading obstetric emergencies in the intrapartum setting
  • Confident with BSOT's triaging system
Desirable criteria
  • Experience developing birth plans
  • Experience using crib sheets for PPH/high BMI patients wanting to use the BC
  • Experience with healthroster
  • Signed off to be able to do Bedside Presentation Scans

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant current clinical experience including comprehensive understanding of midwifery led care
  • Experience of staff managment
  • Experience in change managment
  • Knowledge and experience of risk management processes
  • understanding of complaints management process
Desirable criteria
  • Experience processing datix's
  • Experience attending and participating in round tables and AAR's
  • Experience creating and reviewing policies and guidelines
  • Experience teaching student midwives and preceptorship midwives
