Job overview

Junior/ Senior Clinical Fellow in Breast Surgery or Breast and Endocrine Surgery. 

The successful candidate may be expected to support surgeons across the service. Homerton Breast Unit provides an Oncoplastic and Reconstructive service. This will provide an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced surgeons, particularly as they look to continue to provide high quality clinical care in a post-COVID healthcare environment. The appointee will be expected to perform a full time surgical practice with an interest in Breast surgery or Breast and Endocrine. He or she will be   a member of the breast multidisciplinary team and is expected to contribute to  and practice according to the local, network and national clinical practice guidelines. There is no on-call commitment in the post. Participation in clinical activities at different trust sites or at Barts trust sites may be required for example to assist in joint plastics case.

Main duties of the job

To provide in conjunction with consultant colleagues at The Homerton University Hospital a comprehensive out-patient, day-stay and in-patient service for local residents, and for those referred from further afield to the breast unit.

GMC registration and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in General Surgery including 2 years in Breast Surgery, MRCS or equivalent post-graduate qualification.

Clinical and operative skill levels consistent with a senior registrar would be appropriate. With the ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to the service needs.

The hospital has three day-surgery theatres and six main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxio-facial, urology, ENT, obesity, bariatrics and obstetrics. We also have a surgical treatment room within the main theatres complex.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Diagnosis, treatment and continuing care of patients presenting as emergencies or referred into the service, the post will be based in the Department of General Surgery.

The post involves supporting the supervising consultant in the full spectrum of clinical activity including main theatres, day surgery theatres, out-patients and ward work.

Essential criteria
  • GMC registration and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in General Surgery including 2 years in /Breast Surgery
  • MRCS or equivalent post-graduate qualification
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS (general surgery) and / or FEBS (Breast surgery)

Relevant experience in specialty/subspecialty

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in breast surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in endocrine surgery

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical and operative skill levels consistent with a senior registrar would be appropriate

Leadership and professionalism
