Job overview

Trust Doctor (CT2 Equivalent) in Anaesthesia, based at the Hammersmith Hospital for six months in the first instance, but may be extendable subject to satisfactory assessments.  A minimum of six months prior anaesthetic experience is required for this post. The post is suitable to contribute to a CT3 equivalent year.

 

Hammersmith Hospital is home to the West London Renal and Transplant Centre, has three large cancer treatment centres (hepatobiliary, upper GI and gynaecology) and a specialist cardiac service with a 24/7 primary angioplasty centre, cardiac and thoracic surgery and cardiac intensive care. In addition, it covers a broad range of other surgical specialities including endocrine, urology, obstetrics and infertility.

 

Hammersmith Hospital is famous for its research achievements and has a large community of Imperial College London postgraduate medical students and researchers.

Main duties of the job

General elective anaesthetic care

Theatre list allocations change on a weekly basis which will allow the post holder to experience all of the anaesthetic subspecialties on offer at the Hammersmith under direct consultant supervision. Almost all of Hammersmith operating lists are designated consultant-delivered training lists.

General anaesthetic duties include preoperative assessment, intra-operative care and post-operative management of theatre cases.

In addition to elective theatre work, the post holder will cover cardiac arrests and the acute pain service when on call. The rota follows a full shift pattern with prospective cover, and is compliant with the European Working Time Directive and the 2016 junior doctor contract.

Team working

Whilst on call the post holder is expected to be proactive and liaise effectively with the emergency theatre sister, anaesthetic registrar and relevant surgical specialities to prioritise the emergency workload and facilitate the timely management of any emergency theatre bookings. They are expected to respect other team members’ roles and to work constructively within the anaesthetic and theatre teams.  They are expected to respond promptly and politely when called for assistance.

Rotas: The dept currently operates a full shift rota compliant with New Deal, EWTD and 2016 junior doctor contract.  1:8 rolling rota (48 hours/week)

Hammersmith Hospital

Normal theatre working day       07:30 – 17:30

Long Day                                                          07.30 – 20:00 (1:8)

Night shift                                                         19.30 – 08:00 (1:8)

Teaching:

Is weekly in the anaesthetic dept & via MS Teams - it is consultant & trainee-delivered & consultant-supervised.

Clinical Governance

The Trust adheres to a strict clinical governance programme supported by Dr F Plaat representing anaesthesia at Hammersmith Hospital.

Audit

There is a rolling programme of audit mtgs, the post holder is expected to participate in the clinical audit programme.

Education

The department will provide appropriate non-clinical training opportunities

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Eligible for full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Distinctions, prizes

Language

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate clearly in written & spoken English

Clinical skills

Essential criteria
  • Competent in Basic Anaesthetic practice:
  • History taking, physical exam, basic investigation interpretation, intravenous access.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Appropriate experience documented in log book
  • Experience in anaesthetising elective and emergency ASA I and II surgical patients
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced life support (ALS) provider or equivalent
  • Initial Assessment of Competency in Anaesthesia (from Royal College of Anaesthetists) or equivalent

Academic achievements including research/publications

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principals of research
  • Able to contribute to teaching and learning of others in clinical setting
Desirable criteria
  • Has participated in research
  • Peer reviewed publication
  • Experience of presenting data locally/ regionally/ nationally
  • Additional teaching experience

Audit
