Job overview

The perfusion team at Hammersmith Hospital are seeking to recruit for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join their friendly and committed team. Applications are invited from accredited perfusionists registered with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.

To meet the senior requirements of this role, candidates must have demonstrable, extensive post-qualification experience safely and independently managing complex adult perfusion practice.

You must be able to evidence a high level of clinical competency across a variety of advanced techniques including VA-ECMO, cell salvage and platelet sequestration, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and intra-aortic balloon therapy.

Approximately 500 adult procedures are performed at Hammersmith Hospital annually including mini bypass and minimally invasive procedures. We are one of three hospitals locally on a rotation covering an acute aortic dissection service. 

As part of our expanding cardiac service clinical activity, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in extended list sessions during the week. While we operate a standard 4-day working week, this schedule is flexibly adjusted to ensure coverage of these extended session and our 24/7 on-call service. This role also includes clinical support to the Trust's trauma service based at St. Mary's Hospital and in-hours VA-ECMO service. 

Main duties of the job

  • Participate fully in the 24/7 on-call perfusion service and contribute to the delivery of extended list sessions as part of the expanding cardiac service.
  • The standard 37.5-hour, 4-day working week is adjusted accordingly to provide clinical cover for these extended sessions. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of competence in performing a broad range of routine and emergency adult clinical perfusion techniques, including mini-bypass (MiECC), minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and complex aortic procedures with cerebral perfusion and circulatory arrest.
  • Independently initiate, manage, and troubleshoot Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VA-ECMO) for patients in cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest, ensuring high-quality care within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of standards and quality in perfusion services through audit and policy development.
  • Lead the education and training of trainee perfusionists and other staff groups in routine and advanced clinical perfusion strategies. 
  • Contribute to clinical research projects and trials in collaboration with Imperial College London, supporting the translation of innovative perfusion techniques into patient care.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team.

Education

Essential criteria
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Perfusion Science or equivalent
  • Accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland
  • Active Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced Accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland
  • MSc in Perfusion Science

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post-qualification clinical experience as an autonomous practitioner in adult perfusion.
  • Experience in safely managing complex and emergency adult cardiac procedures including aortic dissection, cerebral perfusion and hypothermic circulatory arrest.
  • Experience in minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS).
  • Experience in the clinical provision and management of VA-ECMO
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in minimally invasive extracorporeal circulation (MiECC) systems.
  • Experience in the clinical provision and management of VV-ECMO.
  • Experience in left-heart bypass, IVC tumour thrombectomy and novel procedures.

Skills

  • Ability to exercise clinical judgement and make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Strong leadership skills to mentor trainees and work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to demonstrate the application of expanded roles/skills within a clinical setting.
