Job overview

We are seeking a senior house officer grade doctor to join our team at St Mary’s Hospital Emergency Department as a junior clinical fellow. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a Central London major trauma centre in a renowned university teaching hospital with an acclaimed research team.

This six-month fixed-term post, with the possibility to extend or rotate into another specialty, commencing in February 2026 (flexible starting times available) is allocated 2 hours of protected non-clinical time a week on a fixed-rota working pattern. The post-holder will be allocated an educational supervisor and access to weekly departmental teaching, as well as opportunities to take part in audit, quality improvement projects and research. Opportunities are available to progress and apply for our internal CESR training rotations and support is provided for those wishing to apply for a training post or complete exams.

Main duties of the job

The clinical commitment comprises a full shift pattern, including out-of-hours work.

The postholder should be of senior house officer grade or equivalent and fully registered with the GMC. The post is suitable as a stand-alone experience or in combination with other trust grade JCF posts (e.g. Major Trauma). Candidates holding a national training number looking for an out-of-programme experience (OOPE) are encouraged to apply. For information on seeking prospective GMC approval for training please refer to the GMC website and your local training leads.

In addition to the protected non-clinical time the postholder will work a full shift pattern including early, late and night shifts providing 24-hour cover with a 1 in 3 weekend commitment supported by ED consultants directly (0800-2400) and remotely (0000-0800) and a 24-hour consultant delivered trauma service. The shift pattern is new deal compliant with a 1A banding (subject to change to comply with new working practices).

The postholder will be allocated a consultant clinical and educational supervisor and opportunities to complete work-based assessments, audit, quality improvement projects and partake in research. The department delivers a full teaching programme with weekly trauma governance and monthly ED governance meetings.

Working for our organisation

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust was created on October 1, 2007 by merging St. Mary’s NHS Trust and Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and integrating with the faculty of medicine of Imperial College London.  One of the largest NHS trust in the country, we have come together to establish the UK’s first academic health science centre (AHSC).

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust already has a world-leading reputation.  Hammersmith and St Mary’s hospitals have two of the highest clinical ratings in the country, rated second and third best Trusts for clinical performance, quality of care and safety.

The Trust was awarded the status of a generic Biomedical Research Centre by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in 2006 for its excellence in translational and clinical research – one of only 5 in the UK.

Imperial College London has a campus on all main sites and is increasingly integrated with all the clinical specialties. The Clinical Sciences Centre of the Medical Research Council (MRC) is also based at Hammersmith Hospital providing a strong foundation for clinical and scientific research.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest education, training and research centres nationally; it is the clinical partner of the Imperial Academic Health Science Centre. All of our staff are actively encouraged to become involved with education and/or research, in addition to their clinical role.
