Job overview

The Gastroenterology service at Imperial College NHS Trust is advertising for one locum full-time post for a Consultant in Luminal Gastroenterology for 12 months, with an anticipated start date of April 2026. 

The Gastroenterology Department aims to provide a comprehensive service for patients with gastroenterological problems whilst being fully committed to developing, teaching, training and research at all levels.  Services are provided for patients from diverse social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and from a wide geographical area. 

The Gastroenterology service has close links to the upper gastrointestinal HPB surgery, which are based at the Hammersmith and the lower gastrointestinal surgery department at Charing Cross. It is extremely well supported by the Histopathology and Radiology departments. There are also close links with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Bariatric service and hepatology (St Mary’s). 

The endoscopy units at ICHT provide extensive diagnostic and therapeutic interventional services.

The Gastroenterology Department provides a comprehensive range of both inpatient and outpatient services.

The applicant will be likely to participate in an on-call rota, most probably GI bleed service (to be negotiated) and include ward cover on a rotational basis. There will be a core SPA for revalidation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will undertake 3 endoscopy lists and 2.5 outpatient clinics per week.

There will be no acute general medicine commitment or inpatient ward rounds.

There will likely be a commitment to the out-of-hours endoscopy service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Outpatient gastroenterology 

All general clinics are booked to a 5 New and 8 F/U template. 

Endoscopy 

The appointed locum will be expected to perform independent upper and lower GI endoscopy and be confident and competent in the treatment of GI bleeds. 

In-patient Gastroenterology 

Inpatients on all three sites are looked after by the consultant on the wards. There is also an acute medicine inpatient service at both Charing Cross and St Mary’s Hospitals.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC registered Medical Practitioner
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCST) (the proposed CCST date must be within 6 months of the interview) b. Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) c. European Community Rights
  • Appropriate Royal College Membership (e.g. MRCP)

Knowledge/Skills

Essential criteria
  • CCST in Gastroenterology

Clinical Expertise in Specialty/Sub-specialty

Essential criteria
  • Independent practice in luminal endoscopy (including therapies) by JAG criteria
  • IT Skills and computer literacy

Leadership / Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Management of staff

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / postgraduates and junior medical staff

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Leading audits

Academic Achievements Including Research / Publications

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at ICHT

Language

Essential criteria
  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
