At St Mary’s Major Trauma Ward we look after patients who have gone through life changing experiences, such as road traffic collisions, violent assaults, suicide attempts, significant falls and much, much more.

Our patients can have severe life threatening injuries and include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord and column injuries, cardiothoracic injuries, orthopaedic and plastic injuries, maxillofacial trauma and general surgical trauma.

Our Trauma ward is a fast paced environment , which will exposes you to a broad range of surgical and medical specialities working together to get the best outcome for our patients. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as a role model for junior staff members in the delivery of a consistent high standard of nursing practice.

They will deputise for the Matron and will support the leadership and management of the Trauma ward with particular emphasis on quality and clinical standards.

They will have continuing clinical responsibility for managing the wards in the absence of the Matron which will include:

  • understanding finances
  • Maintaining a safe staff ratio
  •  Delegation and supervision of all grades of staff 
  • Be visible and approachable for patients, staff and visitors. 
  • Provide clinical support for the nursing staff and maintain a high level of trauma care is provided.

Essential criteria
  • Current Nursing Registration as NMC General Nurse with no restrictions.
  • Recognised Qualification diploma level or above
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development
  • Leadership / management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Management and Leadership training
  • Trauma course/ Consider Trauma experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working in a fast paced acute ward environment
  • Has experience working in an acute NHS setting
  • Management and Leadership training/ experience within an acute MTC setting.
  • Understands the trauma pathway and has experience of trauma nursing care.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of the trauma pathway and trauma nursing care within a trauma centre
  • Management and Leadership training

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential criteria
  • Planning , prioritising and organisational skills whilst working as a member of the team
  • Understanding the trauma pathway and specialist trauma nursing skills
  • Completed Audits and improvement ideas within a ward setting
