Job overview

The Women’s Health Research Centre (WHRC) at Imperial College Healthcare  is at the forefront of clinical research aimed at improving outcomes and experiences in women's reproductive health and childbirth.

An opportunity has arisen to appoint a Band-6 Research Midwife/Nurse to work within the WHRC. The postholder will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day delivery of clinical research, including consenting participants, collecting samples, and maintaining accurate, confidential and high-quality patient data. The role requires strict adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles. 

The postholder will have an opportunity to contribute to a range of women’s health studies from pre-conception to menopause. This role offers the chance to develop specialist research skills within a dynamic, supportive environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience in women’s health research, strong interest in advancing women’s health outcomes, excellent attention to detail, and willing to work collaboratively as part of a team. 

The postholder will be based between Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital. This is a 12-month fixed term role, however a secondment may be considered. 

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will support the aims of the Trust and the National Institute for Health and Care Research clinical network to improve the speed, quality, and integration of clinical research, through the successfuldelivery of clinical research in the NHS.
  • The post holder will be a recognised expert in one or more specialities with an understanding of the research environment. They will take responsibility for the coordination and management of clinical research projects, collaborating with key personnel throughout the trust and network to ensure continued care and support for patients involved in clinical trials.
  • The focus of the role will be in supporting the delivery and development of the research portfolio through identification of suitable participants, co-ordination, recruitment, performance and maintenance of study documentation.
  • The post holder will require sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in the clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patients advocate.
  • The post holder will ensure that any research undertaken safeguards the well-being of research participants and is conducted to good Clinical Practice.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Active Health professional registration (NMC) and first degree in life sciences
Desirable criteria
  • Has attained or is working towards a Degree/ Certificate /Diploma in management/ professional nursing issues.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant clinical experience within research
  • Experience of working within NHS environment and with service users
  • Knowledge of National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), its values, aims and structure
  • Experience in managing complex information
  • Proven participation in the consent process for patients entering clinical trials
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Leadership skills
  • Proven ability to function as an autonomous practitioner
  • Proven teaching and assessing skills
  • In-depth knowledge of clinical research methodology and trial protocols and to communicate this to professionals and lay persons
