Job overview

This is a great opportunity for nurses who would like to work within the maternity recovery and theatre setting at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.
The role entails providing care to women and babies in the maternity recovery area following surgical procedures. 

The role would also include supporting  with theatre activity and the potential to develop role within operating theatre as theatre scrub practitioner.

The post holder will assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate programs of care for individual women/birthing people
They will be involved in the preparation of theatre equipment and instruments.

Responsible for maintaining asepsis intraoperative and compliance with WHO safety procedures. Ensures safety of the theatre and recovery environment including stock levels and storage of equipment.

Provides support to students/learners within the unit
Works collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team members in maintaining policies and standards of patient care related to preoperative and postoperative management.

To have an understanding of recognition of the deteriorating patient and escalate in a timely manner to appropriate clinician
To work alongside midwifery team in caring for the new born and escalate concerns

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high standards of skilled care and support in both preoperative and post-operative areas of the maternity service.  You will work collaboratively with all members of the theatre, maternity and multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe and effective service is provided.
  • The role involves carrying out post-operative care in the maternity recovery area involves and participating as a scrubbed or circulating member of the team within theatre
  • You will work in conjunction with the theatre matron, lead midwife and wider multidisciplinary team to ensure that safe care is maintained within the theatre and recovery environment and be involved in measures to improve the quality of the service. 
  • You will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring stock levels of theatre consumables and escalating any stock concerns to appropriate personnel 
  • The post holder will have oversight of the recovery area, ensuring it clean, tidy and stock levels are maintained.
  • As a team member you will work collaboratively with the midwives in caring for the new born baby while supporting the mother and partner in the care of the baby 
  • You must demonstrate politeness, kindness and sensitivity in dealing with women/birthing people, visitors/relatives and colleagues.

  • Registered nurse > 1year
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Basic Life Support
Desirable criteria
  • Theatre course
  • Post anaesthetic course or experience
  • Mentorship or equivalent
  • Advanced life support

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous ward experience
  • Theatre or recovery experience
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of clinical role in maternity recovery
  • Care of the deteriorating patient
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in recovery/HDU
  • Use of MEOWS
  • Familiar with PCA/epidurals for pain relief

Skills
