North West London Pathology (NWLP) is one of the largest laboratory diagnostic services providers in the UK. Our Cellular Pathology service is UKAS accredited to ISO15189:2022 consolidated at Charing Cross Hospital. The laboratory has state-of-the-art equipment, full sample tracking; voice recognition reporting and scientist led dissection. There is an extensive immunocytochemistry service, Electron Microscopy and Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service based at Hammersmith Hospital.

This recruitment covers Cytology, Gynae (including germ cell/trophoblast), Breast and Urology. The posts are full time. There will be some flexibility to accommodate the successful candidate’s specialty preferences. Flexibility of job-shares /plans will be considered.

Implementation of digital slide scanning and reporting of histology cases is due for completion this summer. The laboratory service currently operates a 6-day working week with extended working days Monday to Friday. There is a continuous service improvement programme supporting the team to meet the current and future clinical needs of patients and clinical teams.

Consultants attend MDTs remotely, and play a critical role in establishing effective working relationships with service users.

As part of an Academic Health Science Centre, we are committed to supporting the ongoing educational development of consultants through supporting publications as well as undertaking more traditionally taught courses.

Post holders will work as part of at least one specialty team, working closely with specialty leads based at Charing Cross Hospital. There may be an occasional requirement to visit other sites for MDTs. Colleague cross cover for annual and study leave is expected.

All staff work in accordance with being a UKAS accredited service, engagement with the Quality Management System is expected and quality improvement is actively encouraged. There may be times where support to investigate adverse occurrences will be requested, the emphasis being on shared learning as an output. Turnaround times, workload and quality is monitored for all staff with weekly reports being shared within the specialty teams.

The service has a rich educational background and is deeply committed to providing an exceptional training experience to the doctors in training and scientific staff.

Digital slide reporting is being implemented for all specialties, and engagement in the improvement programme is fully expected. Support will be given for validations and training on the system. There is a scientist-led dissection service and the frozen section service is fully digital.

The successful applicant will divide their time between clinical work (DCCs) and activities that underpin direct clinical care (SPA) - This may include participation in training, medical education, continuing professional development, formal teaching, audit, job planning, appraisal, research, and local clinical governance activities.

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NWLP is modelled as a shared services organisation jointly owned by the three Trusts. The organisation is hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and as the legal entity for NWLP our staff are employed by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

NWLP is based on a ‘hub and spoke’ structure; the majority of routine, specialist and non-urgent activity is centralised at our hub site at Charing Cross Hospital. Urgent tests required for immediate patient management and treatment are performed in 24/7 Essential Service Laboratories based on-site within the seven hospital sites in the group.

The partnership has created an innovative and sustainable service that delivers outstanding quality to users and patients alike. This innovative approach allows the service to better manage demand, standardise operations, improve value for money and make use of state-of-the-art technology.

We are looking for passionate and enthusiastic Consultant Pathologists to join our team in Cellular Pathology.

This recruitment is focusing primarily on Cytology, Gynae (including germ cell/trophoblast), Breast and Urology (training will be provided for suitable candidate as needed). Other specialties in combination may be considered. Prospective candidates should be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT.

We offer extensive opportunities for quality improvement, education and training which can be guided by the interests of the successful applicant(s). All consultants will be validated to report digitally and supported with training to achieve competence. The department has well established working relationships with clinical teams across the three partner Trusts, the consultant team play a critical role in building these relationships through MDTs.

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification
