Band 5 Registered Nurse, Intensive Care – Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

‘A service that delivers excellence as standard’

Trust Declaration:

As a Trust, we place our patients at the centre of all we do and we recognise how important it is, to invest in our staff to achieve this. We understand that working in ICU can be challenging, therefore it is important to us that we make our ICU’s a great place to work.

In July 2019 the CQC awarded us the rating of ‘Good’ across our Critical Care Services. We are a team, with a passion for excellence, continual improvement, kindness and compassion and a burning ambition to achieve ‘Outstanding’. We are looking for like-minded nurses to join us on our journey!

We are an ICU with low vacancy and attrition rates but we are currently looking to recruit Band 5 Registered Nurses to all of our ICU’s, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

Pathway to excellence.

What we offer:

We recognise that excellent support and exciting opportunities are important to nurses starting their ICU career. At Imperial, as a result of our multi-specialities and available resources, we are confident that we can deliver this for you.

For Band 5 Nurses, we have a clearly defined career pathway, supported by programmes of academic study, to help you shape your ICU career, including:

  • A supported 3 – 5 week supernumerary period, dependent on your previous experience. All newly qualified nurses receive 5 weeks.
  • Early enrolment onto our Foundation to Critical Care Programme. This is a classroom based training programme, where you will get to meet other new joiners to support your journey and learn the theory to underpin your practice.
  • Educator support to complete the National Step competency programme
  • Access to the Critical Care Course / Qualification in Specialism

In addition, as your experience grows you can access:

  • Leadership courses
  • Specialty courses in Trauma, Neuro and Cardiac
  • Quality Improvement Programmes
  • Rotation opportunities (including Outreach and ED)
  • Support to fulfil opportunities in Research & Audit

Throughout, you will be supported by our well-resourced and award winning Critical Care Education Team, who were noted to provide an ‘outstanding’ service in our 2019 CQC inspection.

As a Band 5 Nurse, you have the choice of two different recruitment options:

You can choose to base yourself in one of our three ICU’s, where you will be able to immerse yourself in your chosen speciality. This opportunity will really appeal to those that thrive being part of an established team, who will help support you through your Band 5 journey.

If you are looking for a variety, you can join our successful Band 5 rotation programme. This provides you with the exciting opportunity to create your own bespoke career pathway through our three adult ICU’s. You can decide which of the specialities you wish to gain experience in and for how long. The rotation offers great opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in caring for patients from over 50 specialties. When you decide, you can remain in your preferred unit to consolidate your learning.

We have 88 ICU beds across our three main hospital sites:

Charing Cross Intensive Care is 24 bedded unit and a specialty referral centre for Neurosciences (Neurosurgery and Neurology) and complex ENT and Urological surgery. Additionally the unit serves a busy Emergency Department.

The Hammersmith is ‘specialist hospital’ - a leading centre in major specialties including highly specialised Cardiothoracic services (Cardiac and Thoracic surgery), Hepatobiliary, Haematology, Renal, Upper GI and Cardiology. The site is also home to one of London’s eight heart attack centres. These specialities are supported by our 32 bedded ICU.

St Mary’s Hospital has a 32 bedded Major Trauma ICU, which is part of the Trauma Network for North-West London. We provide emergency access to life and limb saving care, for some of the most seriously injured patients. The Intensive Care also specialises in vascular surgery, as well as supporting the sites busy Emergency Department.
